Northwestern basketball at Illinois: Gameday

After a seemingly endless 8 days, #25 Northwestern (don't think I'll ever get tired of putting a number in front like that) is back in action tonight, opening up their Big Ten schedule at Illinois. Tip off is at 8 PM central time, and the game is being televised by the Big Ten Network, Wayne Larivee and former Illini All-American and boxer Kendall Gill have the call. Michigan State vs. Texas-Arlington is on BTN right before this, so it better not run long like Wake Forest vs UNC-Wilmington did a couple weeks ago, or heads will roll.

The Illini come into this game with a disappointing 8-4 record, and are on a two game losing streak. Most recently, they lost to rival Missouri on a neutral court. I saw the second half of that game, and was not impressed at all with Illinois. They turned the ball over a ton and didn't play as a team, I saw a lot of trying to go one on one and not a lot of passing. Illinois has struggled away from home, as they're just 1-4 and have losses to Utah, Bradley, and SEC bottom feeder Georgia. Their lone road win was a dramatic comeback at Clemson. It seems they have a tendency to erase large deficits on the road, all Northwestern fans remember last year's debacle when the 'Cats choked away a double digit lead in the last 5 minutes at Welsh-Ryan to Illinois.

Of course the flipside to Illinois' poor record away from home is that they are undefeated at home at 7-0. That record isn't too impressive though when you consider Vanderbilt is the only decent team they've faced at Assemby Hall. But still, it's quite the homecourt advantage. Northwestern hasn't won there since 1999, a season Illinois finished last in the Big Ten.

As for their roster,it's a balanced attack on offense, with 5 players averaging double figures. Demetri McCamey (who hit the last second shot in Evanston last year) is their leading scorer. He averages 14 points a game and is second in the Big Ten in assists with just over 5 a game. 7'1" center Mike Tisdale could cause problems inside for the Wildcats front line. He's not a conventional 7 footer in that his offensive game is more mid-range jumpers than it is lay-ups and dunks, but he shoots 60% from the field and 89% from the line, so he's effective. Northwestern will also have to neutralize the Big Ten's second leading rebounder in Mike Davis, who is averaging nearly 10 boards per game.

While the above three will of course play a big role, to me the key to this game for Illinois will be the play of highly touted freshmen back court Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson. Both players are athletic and can shoot from the perimeter. Richardson in particular is very dangerous from outside at 49% from 3, yet strangely he's at just 38% on 2 pointers. He has struggled in all 4 of the Illini losses, so it will be important to slow him down. Paul sparked the comeback against Clemson with 20 points, but he's been very inconsistent this season.

For more on Illinois, scroll down the page for some insight from Hail to the Orange blogger Joe Kutsunis.

Vegas is not drinking the Northwestern kool-aid the way the national media has, as Illinois opened as 7 point favorites, and as of about 1 PM central the line has now moved to 8. While this is higher than I expected, I'd really prefer not to hear complaining from NU fans about a lack of respect. People won't believe in this team until they start winning consistently in the Big Ten. Instead of being upset about the ranked team being an underdog, just bet NU +8 and laugh all the way to the bank if you really believe NU should be favored.

As for my pick (and remember I'm 4-0 against the spread picking NU games), I'm pretty worried about this game given how well Illinois has traditionally played at home, and Northwestern's relative lack of road experience. At times this team lost their composure in the 2nd half against NC State, and the Illinois crowd will be much more hostile than the  Wolfpack fans were. As I said previewing the NC State game, I'd like the 'Cats at home or on a neutral court against Illinois, but I can't bring myself to pick an NU win tonight.

Continued after the jump....

Star-divide

Illinois 70, Northwestern 66

This should be a great game, but in the end the homecourt advantage and superior depth will give Illinois the win. I really really hope I'm wrong.

when are people heading down to Tampa?

assuming you’re not already there

i’m leaving tomorrow

by Loretta8 on Dec 30, 2009 3:10 PM CST reply actions

i know some people that are there

im headed down tomorrow am. reporting from tampa will ensue.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

My Pick

Northwestern 65, Illinois 63.

Everything screams Illinois here. The Illini are desperate for a win, it’s in Champaign, and they have superior talent. But you have to go with your gut, and my gut says Northwestern.

can't find an online feed

looks like i’ll be spending another evening with the dulcet tones of dave eanet

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 7:48 PM CST reply actions

oh snap

no dave eanet. i guess he’s in tampa with every other wildcats related person.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 8:09 PM CST reply actions

they refuse to say their names

i guess nobody wants to own up to being a backup radio commentator for northwestern.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Rowley

Got an offensive rebound. Something is wrong.

by Closso on Dec 30, 2009 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Honestly

Is it just me, or is there no excuse for Rowley not being a DOMINANT Big Ten basketball force? He’s huge, pretty good touch….why can’t he figure it out??

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

always depressing

to remember other schools play “hey baby” at athletic events as well.
also, i may be a bad northwestern fan, but the illini war chant is really catchy.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 8:25 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, but

I didn’t hear any “hey what? Go Illini!” Not the same.

by Closso on Dec 30, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

too many syllables.

they made the mistake of playing that song during the northwestern game just after an nu touchdown. the sound of the nu traveling section yelling “hey what? go wildcats” was clearly audible from the other side of the stadium

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

Anytime

Anytime that Juice wants to drive to the hoop and get us an easy layup, that would be nice….relying on the “only shoot 3s” offense probably won’t work….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:31 PM CST reply actions

We NEED more penetration

….with or without condoms. Seriously, let’s drive it in and score a bit….stop relying on the 3s, boys…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:42 PM CST reply actions

Honestly

Do NOT leave Marcotullio open from outside….dude is phenomenal. He’s like Steve Kerr and Robert Horry’s love child….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:45 PM CST reply actions

its raining threes

unbelievable

up 9 with no points from Thompson

by Loretta8 on Dec 30, 2009 8:46 PM CST reply actions

The best news of all....

…because we ALL know that Juice will get his points, sooner or later…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:47 PM CST up reply actions

42-33 at the half?

I’ll take that….an absurd 11 3-pointers on 23 attempts…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:46 PM CST reply actions

rowley is doing a very good job rebounding and defending against tisdale

also they have to stay with the 1-3-1 with marcotullio out there, he’s been getting burned one on one, not fast enough to stay with mccamey et al. does his best work in the zone.

by Loretta8 on Dec 30, 2009 8:47 PM CST reply actions

also the illinois freshman have been non-existent, hopefully that continues

by Loretta8 on Dec 30, 2009 8:50 PM CST reply actions

I have to say...

…other than in the interior, our defense has been pretty damn good. I mean, 33 points at the half? Not bad, boys and girls, not bad at all…

I wanna see Juice wake up soon….

(Unrelated, but let’s spend a couple thousand this offseason improving our commercials for Northwestern….there HAS to be better ways to advertise the awesomeness of NU than these lame commercials…)

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 8:54 PM CST reply actions

i always say that.

the voice-over in that ad is absolutely terrifying and creepy. also, the guy in the background shooting in spac has clearly never shot a basketball before.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

Can't we get someone else?

David Schwimmer? Stephen Colbert? Michael Wilbon? Brent Musberger? Come on, there HAS to be a better voice for NU commercials….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Hell

Tim Doyle is available….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

i'm available

i don’t have a great voice, but at least i don’t sound like i own a white windowless van with lots of candy in the back

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Hey now

It’s better than that one that portrays our football team as a bunch of nerds. Man I hate that one.

by Closso on Dec 30, 2009 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

So....

…we need Juice to score, to get more points that are not 3 pointers, and find SOMEONE to guard Mike Davis.

Bill Carmody, those are your tasks….work it…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:09 PM CST reply actions

question

i’ve been meaning to ask this for a while: why is the cut-in from commercial breaks for nu basketball games the beginning to the song “word up” by cameo? is anything about nu basketball particularly word uppy?

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 9:09 PM CST reply actions

yeah, still radio

by the way, the color commentator is named “bob”, no word on the play-by-play guy.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

Ummmm....

…we’re making a “Cameo” in the top 25?

Too soon?

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

HAHAHAH

Way to miss the dunk, dumbass…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:13 PM CST reply actions

Can we PLEASE

…stop jacking up threes, and start looking for some easy backdoor cuts/layups?

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:14 PM CST reply actions

Didn't they decide at some point

last year that throwing elbows like that was basically an automatic ejection? I’ll take a third foul though.

by Closso on Dec 30, 2009 9:21 PM CST reply actions

Juice

Juice = clutch. Way to shut up the crowd when we needed it….both with the layup drive, then with taking a touch elbow.

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

its cool, channelsurfing.net

in an ideal world, you’d have a nu vs. illinois stream, but at least you have the north carolina a&t @ tulane game streaming live on the internet for everybody who wants one. good to see you’re prioritizing well.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 9:25 PM CST reply actions

Honestly

Could we take more than 10 seconds off the shot clock before jacking up a 3? Because that would make us a BIT more effective….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:25 PM CST reply actions

That is BS

There is no way Mirkovich was blocking there….

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

Um

Another BS foul…this time on Mirkovich….no way he fouled Tisdale on that shit.

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 9:51 PM CST reply actions

Jeebus

We need to get some game down low….defensive, offensive, whatever….that’s killing us…particularly here…

by Chadnudj on Dec 30, 2009 10:01 PM CST reply actions

well

this is why we can’t have nice things. this better be the last game these radio people announce this season, though.

on to football tomorrow.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 30, 2009 10:15 PM CST reply actions

Welll

Phantom foul on Shurna on that rebound, and Marco got hacked on his airball 3, but what an abortion of an overtime period.

by Closso on Dec 30, 2009 10:15 PM CST reply actions

That officiating was garbage in the overtime!
