Tuesday Random Basketball Thoughts and Picks
- Yesterday most sites released their weekly bracket predictions. Jerry Palm at CBS has Northwestern as his third team out, Andy Glockner at SI has NU out, but does list them as one of his 7 also considered, and Joe Lunardi doesn't even have the 'Cats listed. I was surprised that Lunardi (who by the way has the most obvious rug I have ever seen, he can't be serious with that thing) didn't even mention NU, and I was a bit puzzled by his reasoning when asked about the 'Cats in a chat:
The Wildcats aren't good enough, plain and simple. And, even with the weekend upset of Purdue, they are just 2-3 in the Big Ten. That's not going to get it done.

I Wouldn't Have Them In Right Now Either...
But Lunardi doesn’t know anything. We’re 2-3. That’s true, Lunardi, but have you looked at who we’ve played to start the season. At Illinois, vs. Michigan State, at Michigan, vs. Wisconsin, vs. Purdue. We get 6 games against Indiana, Penn State, and Iowa in our final six. The conference record will improve substantially if we win those games. We pull one more major upset and defend the home court vs. Michigan and Illinois (not an easy task), we might be 11-7 in conference at the end of this. That would get us in for sure. Not going to be easy (especially since I expect us to lose either at Indiana or at Penn State), but not even having us in the eight teams first out is nuts. And the comment that “we’re not good enough”: you’re a bracketologist, Lunardi, not a talent scout.

Illinois pick
Real crapshoot there. Purdue hasn’t been Purdue the last few games, but Illinois’s wins have been over the bottom of the conference. I’d take Purdue.
