Northwestern, 29, Minnesota, 28, Post-game thread
W!
Jesus. Stefan Demos did stuff, Jeremy Ebert made the greatest catch I've ever seen of all time, and we're 5-0.
I'm still hyperventilating, because we will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever win a Big Ten game comfortably - if you are too, here's your space to chat.
Football season is fun, guys. Glad the Big Ten schedule is here.

Not sure when I will calm down, but this drink might help
Clearly Demos is still thinking about the Outback Bowl. The good news? We made every mistake possible and got a W on the road in the Big Ten. The bad news? We made the same mistakes last week and dont appear to have learned much.
Also, how about Tony Jones? Kid made a couple mistakes but was a huge spark as well
Wow
Ok so ive read just about every post written this season by lake the posts and sippin on purple… but for like 3 players in uniform today on the field I was like… WHO?
Im legit hyperventilating too… seriously, my lungs feel like I just ran a 5k… hopefully that comes down
And how about my boy Ben Johnson with 2 HUGE plays to close out the game!
Dan Persa just did a postgame sitdown on BTN
What a classy guy!

Running Backs
My question is this? Who coaches the running backs? What is his backgroud? Was he a former Pro? A college runningback? Is he the one who makes the decisions on who plays? Maybe it is time to look at who is in charge of the runnung backs. What is the the criteria for the starter? Is there a formula..off season competition or just coaches choice? I would like to know who is the fastest running back…. the strongest…and who knows the playbook inside and out…because the offensive plays to the backs appear to be very shallow.
About the O-line…
None of the commentators (web or TV) has mentioned the offensive line and their inability to provide holes. Their run/block capability is sub-par…The best they have done all year is against Ill. State and Rice!
My grade for the NW running backs is F+ against the Gophers!
I don't disagree
but against Vanderbilt and Central Michigan, I gave the running backs a rock solid “F” (no plus). At least Trumpy runs forward. And Fitz made a big move by taking Adonis Smith’s redshirt off of him today. That was a huge statement.
rb's coach
matt macpherson, but everybody calls him “mac.” not sure his background, but he’s been around the program since the entire tyrell sutton era, so he’s not that bad at telling running backs how to do stuff. i’m pretty sure he isn’t involved in the play-calling process. i don’t think he’s the issue here.

I'm a big believer in "A win is a win"
but the fumbles have to stop. It’s incredibly hard to win a game with a -3 margin (which it was before the last play).
How does every single game come down to this…
Reality has a little-known Northwestern bias
NU prez knows how to get PUMPED
Trying to get my heart rate down
WOW! Why do we always have to make it come down to the last play of the game? We almost gave that game away just like the Packers did to the Bears last Monday night. A win is a win though and I’ll take it.
The turnovers in the red zone were disturbing, but I’ll give Persa the benefit of the doubt. I was glad to see Fitz go with other running backs who could score and pick up first downs. After last week I didn’t want to see Arby Fields running sideways anymore.
Defense still needs to learn to shut down the run game and improve their coverage. There were some first downs given away due to bad coverage or missed tackles.
Special teams….well, what can I say? I’ve been pretty vocal about my distain for Demos. It’s pretty sad when your heart is racing when this guy comes on to kick a 27 yard field goal because you know it’s a 50/50 chance (at best). I just don’t know why Fitz doesn’t give Budzien a chance.
We may get away with playing like this against a weak Purdue team, but if the Cats don’t improve we are going to crash hard against teams like Penn State, Iowa and Michigan State.
C’mon Fitz….you know the issues, now it’s time to whip them into shape.
I Aged 20 Years Watching This Game...
Okay, not really, but it sure felt that way. When Demos kicked that field goal with just over 2 minutes remaining, I thought for sure we were going to lose. I mean, we left Minnesota just enough time to go down and win the game. But the D came up big.
Other Thoughts
1. Persa: 23-30. Only 30 passing attempts… They need to be at the 40-50 mark every game (since most of the running plays I saw were 1-2 yd. gains at best). I realize there were probably about 10 other passes where Persa tucked the ball and ran, but still… give up on the running game, Fitz. Just start chucking it.
2. This game should have been OVER in the first quarter. We were up 7-0, moving the ball… fumble. Then we scored again, got the ball again, and were driving again… fumble. Hold on to the football, people!
3. We’re 5-0. And at the end of the day, that’s the only thing that counts.
7 more wins to go.
Oh, and the penalties...
Those were almost as back as the turnovers. Two offsides calls, plus that facemask when we had them at 2nd and 25… brutal. Just brutal.
they're ND fans
as another south of chicago (yet still chi-land area) ‘cat, they’re just angry b/c NU will still have a better year than TTFSB
Pretty sure I cut my life span by five years watching it
But we won. That’s what I have to keep telling myself.
Because if I concentrate on our defense, which can’t stop anyone, or our lack of discipline then I’ll start to lose hope in this team. I’d love to think that this team “knows how to win,” but three turnovers and a missed PAT (WTF DEMOS) aren’t going to cut it against teams that actually belong in the Big Ten.
Regardless, BWW was awesome after we got the pick. Great environment. The students really care about this team.
Just got back from the game...
Wow.
Absolutely beautiful day — mostly sunny with passing clouds, 60 degrees and crisp. Some significant wind. Had first row seats in Section 202, and was right next to their massive scoreboard. Sat in a section with a bunch of NU folks, but wasn’t able to bond with them as they occupied the highest rows of the section. Mild Minny fans all around — all were very friendly while me, my sis and bro-in law (all NU alum) were screaming the whole game.
Few Observations from my section:
1. Place was about 75% full at kickoff, and then filled up about to 85% by half-time. The music heading into the 4th quarter was some 90s Jock Jam, followed by Sweet Caroline. Kinda weird.
2. TCF Bank is a beautiful stadium — great amenities, great sight lines all around. At the Scoreboard end of the field there’s a few rows of seating and then a plaza that allows folks to walk through and watch the game. Even saw a few dads throw the ball to their kids there.
2a. When the Gophs score, the PA announcer declares, “That’s 6 Points…IN THE BANK!” Catchy.
3. Game day atmosphere outside the park was festive — lots of family friendly booths (facepainting, draw your own sign) along with a studio show was taping.
4. Minny played meat and potatoes against us on offense — pound us with the run, and then play-action. Weber is very good with play-action deception, and their backs were just Dodge Ram-Tough. Opponents should definitely watch tape on this, as their O-Line beat us up, and protected Weber.
5. On the other hand, our offense was clicking in the first quarter. We seriously could’ve hung 28 points on them, as they looked lost on pre-snap, and bewildered after we’d run off consecutive positive yardage plays. It really was a shame we didn’t make it 2 scores, cause at that point we would’ve forced them to throw, and they would’ve been one-dimensional on offense.
6. Saw that Ebert catch right in front of me. We couldn’t believe it, as Persa got drilled letting it go, and it just looked like a wounded duck heading Ebert’s way. That was uber-clutch.
7. As the teams came out from half-time, I saw Demos hit 2 wind aided 50 yarders.
8. Trumpy looked good from where I was sitting — always moving forward, and working inside well. Frankly, I was surprised to see Smith’s shirt get burnt.
9. That play action TD to Tony Jones was gorgeous. We didn’t know who #12 was, and had to look it up in the program. I’m sure the Gophs had no idea who this guy was as he just burned them.
9a. My sister taps me as Stefan lines up his game winning kick: "Daily Headline tomorrow: “Re-Deemos.”
10. Overall, great game experience. Loved it when the fellas came over towards our section to sing the fight song after the win. I was yelling for them to get on the bus.

I don't think Demos redeemed himself
He made a 27 yarder. Can we just go one game without a missed extra point or field goal? Now he’s just let himself get f***ed up mentally. He melted down last year down in Champaign and again at the Outback Bowl. The kid has lost his mental edge, and it’s time for Fitz to take action.
Sheesh...
Game is on the line. Dude comes through. All he can do is hit the next field goal he’s asked to do.
www.massivecreativity.com
and hitting the game winner here will help his confidence, so this coming week, he may well perform better. kicker confidence is a weird thing
whatever
I just know that it’s ridiculous to feel your heart racing with anxiety every time this guy comes onto the field for a PAT or a 27 yard field goal. There’s a reason for it, and it shouldn’t be. We need a better kicking game.
whatever...
actually, i can control whether or not my heart is racing when he’s on the field. what I can’t control is his confidence, which is alright since Demos appears to still have a ton of it. Dude was on Groza watch — he’ll get it together. He saved our bacon last year against Indiana, EMU.
So far in 2010, acc to ESPN stats, Demos is 7th in conf according to FG%, and last in XPM%.
’10 Demos – 7/10 70% (B10 avg so far is 76%)
In terms of history, Demos would rank as slightly better than average in conference. However in ‘Cat history, he’s only behind Villareal in the last 7 years (Fitz – Walker eras)
’09 Demos – 18/25 72% (B10 avg: 70.1%)
’08 Villareal – 20/25 80%
’07 Villareal – 12/18 67%
’06 Howells – 8/12 67%
’05 Howells – 11/21 52.4%
’04 Plattoon: 11/22 50%; (Huffman – 7/17 41.2% / Howells – 4/5 80%)

can we get some extra point stats?
for some reason, that seems to be where his problem is, at least this year.

Bad Game
If we play the rest as bad as this one, we don’t beat Illinois and certainly not Indiana, not to mention PSU, Wiscy, MSU or you know who. Maybe Purdue, but just maybe.
Positive Negatives
IMHO, the o-line continues to be the weak point. We get Persa time to pass, but w/o a strong push, our RBs are struggling, even against the Nickel. But most the other problems are fixable or have shown some quality flashes.
This may be a bad comparison, but the ‘cats are looking a bit like the bears. Mental lapses, stupid penalties, and some execution errors, but nothing that is, individually, season breaking. Just like the bears, we put up yardage on offense, and the defense steps up when the situation forces them to stop over thinking and just play. There is a lot of room for growth and we’ve done it well under Fitz, even in his first year, so the season is far from over. So we’ll get back to Evanston, get our shit pushed in this week during practice, then come out and (hopefully) run riot over an injury laden Purdue.
Trumpy got 4 ypc. That’s pretty good. If Smith can get going and give us some speed and wiggle, we’ll be service-able in the backfield.
It was terrific to see Tony Jones get some run out there. Brown, Fields, Stewart, Ebert, Lawrence, Dunsmore…wow, we’ve just got a ton of options out there. As long as Danny keeps making good decisions (and he knew that the pick he threw today was being overzealous), then we’re good.
I’m a bit dumbstruck at how negative the fan-base is while we’re 5-0. I’m not saying print up the Rose Bowl tickets now, but the team is all about going 1-0 each week. I don’t think this team thinks its Ohio State and it’s going to out-talent everyone from week to week. The truth is we’ve got young guys on both sides of the ball, and they’re going to improve as the year goes on.
“These guys aren’t going to win any more games like this if they keep playing like this…” DUH? How bout give them the benefit of the doubt that they might actually…I don’t know, improve?
Should we be ranked? Probably not. But as long as these guys keep ending up with more points than the guys that they’re lining up against, I’m fine with that.
www.massivecreativity.com
Exactly
we struggled on the road on our big ten opener, so did tOSU, Wisconsin, and Michigan (all of who I think much better than the teams they played). We’ll be ok.
And remember, we lost to Duke in 2007 but still went on to win 4 more. And the program has come a long way since then (like winning today when we otherwise beat ourselves)
the negative fan-base
If you watched the Big Ten wrap up on the BTN Saturday night, one of the analyst described Northwestern as “sloppy” and that is why you are getting the negativity from the fan base. I love my cats and am excited about 5-0. But I also know that playing like we did against Vanderbilt and Minnesota won’t win games as we face Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State. I’d really just like to see this team be able to put away a weak opponent versus sloppy mistakes that bring it down to the last play of the game. It’s been ten years since we won a Big 10 title and people really want to see a strong team emerge this year. Instead we are seeing a team that has barely eeked out a few of those wins. Five weeks into the season some of the things we saw today should be taking better shape.
I’m confident that Fitz knows where the weak spots are and will keep working on them.
Go ’CATS!
just read stephon simmon's tweet.
he called it racist that he isnt starting. and then he called trumpy “the big white hope”
matthew0
uhhhhh
not to yell at frequent commenters, but we need to have a chat here – there’s a reason i hid your next comment.
first off, this is clearly what we in the business call a joke. if you do not like jokes or understand that they are jokes, i’d advise you to stop reading my site, because i make them sometimes. i plan on making jokes about northwestern having a preponderance of white running backs in the future and would not expect you to get mad about it, so, no need to get mad about it with simmons.
secondly, if a player has a protected twitter feed, it’s protected for a reason. dudes on the football team are college students just like me and a lot of my readers and they’re entitled to do stuff without the world knowing about it. so chill with this type of stuff.

Oh, and
Ebert’s catch was ESPN’s #4 Play of the Day
AND . .. . .
the announcers said “Northwestern is 5-0!” like 5 different times in the broadcast. I’m thinking we finally get ranked this week. I live in Texas now, and with UT having TWO losses. . ..I will be pissed if they remain in and we are not.
"I drank what?" - Socrates
There are four unbeaten Big Ten teams
3 are ranked in the AP, along with 1-loss Wisconsin and Iowa. According to the votes, we would be #30.
Keep winning and we move up. That’s all there is to it.
