Northwestern 67, Michigan 52

Led by strong 3-point shooting, balanced scoring, and lockdown defense in the second half, Northwestern pulled away and cruised to an easy win over Michigan, sweeping the season series and snapping a 2 game losing streak.

Drew Crawford continued to be a Wolverine killer, leading all scorers with 17 points, highlighted by a circus reverse lay-up late in the second half. John Shurna filled up the box score with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, and Michael Thompson and Luka Mirkovic had 12 points apiece. Jeremy Nash had just 5 points, but still contributed by grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out 5 assists. For most of the night the offense operated smoothly, as the 'Cats shot 54% from the field, 50% on 3 pointers, and had 21 assists on their 25 field goals. Perhaps the best assist came when Ivan Peljusic hit Mike Capocci for an alley-oop dunk in garbage time.

In the first half, Northwestern had trouble getting stops, as Michigan had no problems with the 1-3-1 and got a lot of open looks, especially from 3-point range. But in the second half, Bill Carmody abandonded the 1-3-1 (finally) and went with exclusively match-up zone, and Michigan had no answers for it, scoring just 7 points in the first 14 minutes of the half. Manny Harris led the Wolverines with 11 points, but was just 4-14 from the field and turned the ball over 4 times. DeShawn Sims, who entered the night as the Big Ten's leading scorer, was held to a season low 4 points, and for some reason only played 22 minutes despite not being in foul trouble. I have to think he was either injured or was being disciplined, as he sat out the last 10 minutes of the game. Michigan shot just 32% for the game and their usual 29% on threes.

While Northwestern certainly deserves credit for their defensive effort in the second half, I do have to say that Michigan laid down like dogs. Seriously, their performance after halftime was downright embarrassing. I expected Michigan to at least play hard and give the 'Cats a game, and I was 100% wrong. Everyone on the Wolverine roster should be ashamed of how bad they were in the second half, I honestly don't think I have ever seen a team quit like that, frankly it was pathetic.

It's been a long time since Northwestern had an easy win like tonight, in fact it was in 2009 against Central Connecticut State. Even though Michigan gave up in the second half, the 'Cats helped to break their spirit by clamping down defensively, and it was nice to cruise to victory in a BIg Ten play, something that doesn't happen often. Now they have plenty of time to rest up for Indiana on Sunday, and hopefully get on a winning streak.

Can I Just Say...

That I think this was the best game the Cats have played all season?

Grades

Big Men: B+

This grade is mostly for Mirkovic’s terrific performance. He played solid interior defense and had 12 points.

Forwards: B+

Shurna is going to be a monster the next two seasons. That’s fairly clear to me. 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists are just terrific.

Guards: A-

As good as Shurna and Mirkovic were, this game was won by the guards. Crawford will be giving Michigan fans nightmares for some time. Thompson made a couple of stupid errors and committed one bad foul, but he was still really good. And Nash… 11 rebounds. I had no idea. Marcotullio continues to struggle, but everyone else was just great.

Coaching: C+ (First Half), A (Second Half)

Carmody tried to use the 1-3-1 in the first half, and it just didn’t work. It really hasn’t this year, so he should just stop using it. Against everyone (including MSU and Ohio State). But in the second half, the coaching was just brilliant. The Cats switched to a matchup zone (or was it man to man? I’m not sure) and stuck with it. And the results were plain to see. The Cats also did a great job of keeping their feet on the accelerator when they got a big lead (something they didn’t do last year), which allowed them to cruise to victory. That’s all on Carmody. First half: awful. Second half: brilliant. He needs to coach like he did in half two for the entire rest of the season.

Game MVP: Drew Crawford

A couple of thoughts...

1.) It’s still going to be difficult to make the NCAA Tourney this year, but of any teams in recent history, this one’s got the grit to do it. With the intensity at home, this team ought to finish at least 10-8. They haven’t had any bad losses, and I really hope that trend continues.

2.) There’s no excuse for us to lose at home the rest of the season. It sounded like a light crowd tonight, but as the wins pile up, there should be no stopping us.

3.) I really, REALLY hope that Crawford plays four years with us, because he’s going to be fantastic starting next year. How on earth did we rope this guy in?

4.) Everyone pray for an injury-free remainder of the season. Our lack of depth shows, and we can’t afford to lose anyone at this stretch where every win matters.

i'm a HUGE fan

of the fact that a 5.3k plus crowd is suddenly “not that great.” I’m thrilled that 3/4 of the student section full is a poor showing. this is amazing.

Go Cats.

A great win, Drew Crawford is the real deal, John Shurna is a monster and as bad as the Northwestern defense has looked this year, they did a great job last night, especially against Manny Harris and Sims, Michigan looked awful.
