NIT: vs. Rhode Island on Wednesday

SFTF wins this time, as they correctly reported we'd be playing the University of Rhode Island Wednesday. We're a seven seed, they're a two seed.

Discuss, more later.

P.S. Cuttino Mobley is a tool.

Psyched That We're In

Sad that I am … but yeah, I didn’t expect us to make it. Pretty steep odds, now that we’re on the road, but hey, I’ll watch.

we JUST made it in

all the 8 seeds and three of the 7 seeds had auto bids.

we’re the one 7 seed that didn’t.

wow. that close to being in the cbi.

I'll take it!

This looks like a pretty good tourney — good name teams like UConn, North Carolina and some quality mid-majors. With 347 D1 teams and increased parity, I think the NIT is less of a “joke” than it has been in recent years.

Agreed...

…this is probably one of the best/toughest NIT fields in recent memory, if not all time. I really like our chances to make some noise in this tourney….then again, I thought we’d beat Tulsa last year….

Still, great experience for our young guys, so they understand what tourney (even small “t” tourney) basketball is like….if they can make a run, and get this to carry over to next year….well, watch out….

We're on ESPNU...

I don’t get that channel, so I’m not going to be able to watch. Pity. Still, great that we made it.

I think this is a favorable matchup, URI isn’t that scary a team despite their record, and the field of the CBI is so awful I’m very glad to avoid that tournament, winning it wouldnt even be an accomplishment.

no hatred for Lamar Odom or Tyson Wheeler?

by Loretta8 on Mar 15, 2010 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

i love lamar

and i’ve never heard of tyson wheeler.

by Rodger Sherman on Mar 15, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

further inspection

tyson is one of the greatest per minute players in nba history, in part because he only played 3 minutes, but i’m sure he would’ve kept up his 100% clip from beyond the arc over a 10-year career

he was the point guard when Mobley was there

got fouled shooting a 3 in the final seconds of their elite eight game vs stanford down by 3. he missed all three free throws.

Rhode Island blog?

I haven’t been able to find one yet – has anyone seen one?

by RotoJeff on Mar 15, 2010 10:24 AM CDT reply actions

nothing so far

i highly doubt there is one – nu actually has a relatively vibrant blog scene, when you think about it.

by Rodger Sherman on Mar 15, 2010 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Dammit.

This game is within driving distance for me (about 5 hours, I figure), and I’d normally have no excuse for missing it- except that I’m leaving the country a few days later for a long planned trip, and need to use the time to get things wrapped up here at work.
At least I have ESPNU.

don't feel bad

i’m pretty sure 5 hours driving for an nit game isn’t worth it, but that’s just me.

I know where you’re coming from. But isolated up here in the far northeastern corner of the US, it’d be nice to take advantage of the relatively few opportunities that arise to see the Cats play.

No home-and-away series with the Maine Black Bears in the offing?

Rhode Island and Northwestern

Hello, and welcome to Rhode Island. I am sure the team from Northwestern has already arrived.

All of us are looking forward to the game tomorrow night.

Rhode Island is a very good and dangerous team. All cylinders will be working.

Tyson Wheeler was an excellent player, a pure three point shooter, and a very quick guard. However, his height was a detriment. Only about 5’8" on a good day.

Cuttino Mobley was a second round draft pick, and had many seasons in the NBA. A recently diagnosed heart condition ended his career.

Rhode Island has had many good players throughout the years. We were only a minute away from going to the Final Four in the late 90’s with Wheeler, Mobley and others.

I am not sure Lamar Odom counts. He was only here for one season, and then jumped to the NBA. So………

Whatever plays out tomorrow night, best of luck to both teams.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
