Where I Come From: The Outback Bowl and other Memorable Moments

This post is sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011.

I'll quote from yesterday's post:  "I done said it a million times: I'm a young'un." Today I was asked to write about memorable moments in my time as a Northwestern fan. Short memory FTW!

Star-divide

Honorable mentions: Indiana, 2009 (26 point comeback), Iowa, 2009 (victory over undefeated Iowa) Illinois, 2009 (road-trip to Champaign) Alamo Bowl, 2008, and Ohio, 2008 (my first game at Ryan Field)

3. Minnesota, 2008

I only wanted to put things I attended, but, this game was too good to pass up.

11 AM on a Saturday in the fall is an interesting thing to experience in a dorm. Every guy on the floor is watching the game, but all but three of them don't have the coordination, stamina, or will to leave their room. So it's basically three hours of people interacting through loud, incoherent shouts whenever something happened. I woke up at about 11:05, my roommate was gone, and I somehow gathered together enough skill to put the game onto my computer, and for three hours, got to see Mike Kafka redefine the quarterback position and Brendan Smith make me blow out my small intestine yelling at the screen.

2. Storming the field against Illinois, 2008

I wasn't aware people stormed fields at Northwestern. This wasn't a particularly great game - we had it in the bag the whole time - but I just remember the high-caliber sense of excitement the whole time. I sat in about four different sections of the student section during the game, mainly because we wanted to get away from this very drunk Illini fan who jingled an enormous set of keys on our heads to mock the key-jingling on kickoffs thing we do. We slowly creeped down towards the field, and then, when the whistle blew.... bang. No time to think, just react. Being on the field, high-fiving random players and singing the fight song with them, pretty much made my freshman year football season. I distinctly remember complimenting Brendan Smith on his return and yelling "YEAH LONG SNAPPER" at whoever it was who our long snapper was at the time. Good times were had by all.

1. Outback Bowl, 2010.

I've often wondered what it was like to be in a stadium section with 500 people whose minds are all imploding at the same time.

The things that happened to Northwestern's football team are indescribable. I know. A few weeks ago, I had to write something at the Daily for their year-end issue about the game, and my mind started to implode again. So many crazy, improbable, horrible things happened. I remember turning to my friend from high school after Auburn had fumbled the ball for the second straight possession in the last two minutes to give NU a chance to win the game after once again falling down two touchdowns and coming back, and everybody was cheering and screaming, and diabolically laughing, and all I could say was "WHAT IS GOING ON" in the type of voice that girls in movies who just saw their boyfriend get eaten by a giant monster use, and all he could say was "I HAVE NO IDEA". Nothing made sense. Pigs flew. I saw an Auburn fan with a Star of David tattoo on his neck. The world spun backwards.

When all was said and done, the people I had come with were mentally and physically exhausted. We'd been standing on our feet since 10 AM, for about five hours.  Our throats hurt from four hours of yelling, our brains hurt from seeing the weirdest football game ever. Rational people would have left the stadium and waited for a cab. We decided to stay in the stadium for 25-plus minutes, then walk the seven miles through the crappiest nether-regions of Tampa to our hotel, culminating in a Cici's Pizzeria. We walked through blocks and blocks without houses or people.  We saw stray roosters. We walked along a barbed wire fence separating us from the Tampa International Airport.

I lost the ability to think during that walk. We may have lost the game, but I'll forever remember that day of highs, lows, and the lows lower than those lowest lows, and Cici's Pizza.

Now tell me your stories be they memory-related or Cici's Pizza related. Anybody out there make it to the '95 Rose Bowl? Did they have Cici's?

2000. Northwestern-Michigan. 54-51.

Enough has been written about this game, but it’s everything about being a Northwestern fan all wrapped into one.

I DISTINCTLY remember that NO ONE in the student section gave up hope, even after Damien Anderson dropped the 4th down, sure thing, go-ahead TD pass in the lights. NO ONE.

Instead, irrationally, almost foolishly, we cheered LOUDER. I will forever believe that the crowd WILLED Anthony Thomas to fumble that ball (his first and only fumble that season), that we WILLED the football gods to give us a break, and that the football gods rewarded our faith in Northwestern by making the greatest offensive football game ever played end the way it should — with Northwestern snatching victory from the jaws of defeat and the students descending upon the field.

Honorable mention? Outback Bowl is a good one; ditto Alamo Bowl against Mizzou in 2009. I’d also mention the 2004 defeat of Ohio State, which was simply shocking (and another great “storm the field” moment) — seeing all the silenced Buckeye fans leave Ryan Field was a pretty cool experience.

At least it wasn't Denny's

Tough question. Being in the first row of the student section in 2004 against Ohio State would probably be at the top of my list, but the atmosphere in the NU section at the Alamo Bowl (who knew Northwestern fans could get that into a game!?) and the utter craziness of the Outback Bowl NU section will never be forgotten.

I just wish I had seen an Auburn fan with a Star of David tattoo on his neck. It would have made the flight back to Chicago that evening far more tolerable.

By the way, I’ve been to two bowl games (Alamo ‘08 and Outback) and both times I had my pregame meal at a Denny’s. I got to the Alamodome plenty early and the Denny’s was the only place I could find within walking distance for an early dinner. And in January there was a Denny’s across the street from my hotel and seemed to be the only place open that early on New Year’s Day.

My two goals for a bowl this year are 1) a win and 2) no Denny’s.

actually

you’re not allowed to go to a dennys before any future bowl games. i will personally go to every dennys near our next bowl site and make sure you don’t go in there.

No need to worry

I’ve already imposed a self-ban from Denny’s prior to bowl games (though it extends to the rest of my life out of common sense).

I’ll live off gas station food if I have to next time.

They might thank you

My pregame Rose Bowl meal will be at the Griddle in West Hollywood. Then again, all of my meals might be there.

I completely forgot about 2008 @ Michigan. Just completely miserable weather. About as bad as it can get (barely above freezing, soaking wet, 25-30 mph winds right in my face, etc.). But once they had that game locked up it was just amazing. Sure it was a long drive back with wet jeans, but it turned out to be plenty of fun. Eating in Ann Arbor after the game surrounded by a bunch of depressed Michigan fans was plenty of fun, as well.

My Top 3 (where I was in attendance)

1. Northwestern 54 – Michigan 51, 2000

Enough said.

2. Northwestern 33 – Ohio State 27, OT, 2004

Don’t need to say more than that, either.

3. Northwestern 35 – Auburn 38, OT, 2010 Outback Bowl

Yes, NU lost, but this was easily the craziest football game I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to every NU home game since 2000 and many away games as well (like “Victory Right” in 2000 at Minnesota) – so I’ve seen some crazy games.

PS: CiCi’s is awesome, and FYI there is one that opened in Niles by Golf Mill (on Golf Rd.).

My Top 5 (where I was in attendance)

1) October 7, 1995 – Northwestern 19, Michigan 13 (at the Big House) – It seemed like there were 25 of us at the game, surrounded by 100,000 Michigan fans, which made the victory so much sweeter. It also made us realize that the Notre Dame victory wasn’t a fluke, and we were actually good. Also fun note: we lied our way into Michigan’s Sigma Chi because one of my friends knew the handshake, but were ferried out in a rather aggressive manner after the caught on that we weren’t brothers. One really drunk guy tried to get in after us and the entire fraternity house beat the crap out of him. It seemed very non-NU to us.

2) October 19, 1996 – Northwestern 34, Wisconsin 30 (at Camp Randall) – This one was sweet for multiple reasons. There were about 50 of us at this game in the corner of the stadium. One loud obnoxious fan screamed Ron Dayne’s name throughout the entire game without a break. And it wasn’t just screaming his name, it was RRROOOONNNNN DAAAAYYYNNNNNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enunciating every portion of the two syllable name. Ugh. At the end, we were down 27-30 and all they had to do was run the clock out. Dayne fumbled and we scored a touchdown to win it at the very end. After that, we couldn’t stop saying Dayne’s name either. Sweet justice.

3) October 5, 1996 – Northwestern 17, Michigan 16 (at NU) – Last minute field goal to win it …. and it’s through the uprights, only to have the kick called back because of a whistle that no one heard. Unbelievable, until he hit it again. Clutch kicking. Note: I’ve been to games in Happy Valley and in Gainesville, in the Big House, etc., but I cannot remember a louder crowd than when he hit the second field goal. Although I was sitting in the student section, which probably made a difference.

4) January 1, 1996 – Northwestern 32, USC 41 (ROSE BOWL) – Great moment was when we recovered an onside kick (which was one of Barnett’s favorite tricks). Bad moment watching Keyshawn Johnson play our secondary for fools. I was not particularly impressed by USC’s coach at the time, I want to say John Robinson, who lashed out at the media in his victory speech in front of the whole crowd, complaining that Northwestern got more favorable coverage during the week. Jerk-off.

5) And of course, January 1, 2010, Northwestern 35, Auburn 38 (Outback Bowl) – Most ridiculous game I’ve ever seen. I’d post it higher for ridiculousness alone, no other game comes close for that, but the pain for the loss was tough to bear (tougher than the USC loss, because we were just happy to be there), particularly on the flight home the next day.

1996 vs. Michigan

I’m cursed with a terrible memory, so I don’t remember much from attending the Gowins double game-winning FG game against Michigan from when I was 12. But I do distinctly remember going with a friend and my dad and trying to get my dad to drive by the house of a friend who was a Michigan fan just to honk the horn after the game. My 1995 Big Ten Champions hat got good use at school.

1996 Purdue Home

I remember I bugged a kid in my class to take me to the game (I was 8, but then again I’d do the same thing now so whatever). I had the flu and was miserable the whole game. If memory serves me correct, the cats won on a close to last second field goal to clinch another Big 10 title (well, share) and we stormed the field for the first time in my sports supporting career. I’ll still remember Autry coming past me and I got to pat him on the back. I was on top of the world at that point and I even forgot I was sick.
The day was capped off by seeing one of the best movies ever made-Space Jam.

Special mention to 1995 Iowa, the only time Gameday was at Northwestern. It was real crappy out and I was there with my grandma. Good times.

The last two storming of Ryan Field were pretty memorable.

There was the one Rodger mentioned about Northwestern beating the FIBs 27-10 in a very undramatic game. I’m still trying to figure out why we stormed. I was sitting in the end zone and saw the students trickle onto the field. At the time, my alma mater (UWGB) hadn’t had a game worth storming for since 1994. Since then they’ve beat a ranked Butler and ranked Wisconsin basketball squads, but at the time, I wanted to storm something. It was really cool to be on the field and celebrating the last Sweet Sioux with the team, students, and everybody else even though our connection was little more than just buying tickets that day and that hat they gave away.

Last year’s 33-31 win over Wisconsin was a different story. My first season of being a season ticket holder was nearing its end and like everyone else, I wanted to see a win. A win also improved our chances for a good bowl game. It was one of the few days I didn’t want to wring Demos because of a perfect day kicking (you will all learn that I HATE HATE HATE his punting) and it was a typical Cardiac ’Cats victory. Those two turnovers at the end of the game made the whole season for me. Once again, fans stormed. At least this time Wisconsin was ranked.

The funny thing is that when you’re late to the storm, it just becomes a photo op. Both times, fans of both team just meandered onto the field for a photo op. It’s almost become an impromptu marketing ploy. As long as they win, I don’t care.

you don't like stefan demos' punting?

you will soon be an outcast on this site!
oh, wait, nobody does. my bad. got confused for a sec.

I'm not even joking

The student section can probably hear me cursing his 30 yard line drive punts and his little attempts to go outside the box so he can angle it. The backup punter is my favorite player on the team.
