Northwestern 23, Vanderbilt 21: post game thread
Dan Persa channeled his inner Rick Allen and pretty much singlehandedly led NU to victory, as the 'Cats escaped on the road. The defense let up over 400 yards, the kicking game was horrendous, and the running backs somehow seem to have regressed from last season.
But a win is still a win, so let's try to enjoy it. Better recaps are coming once Rodger sobers up.

Didn't see the game,
but from what I can gather from the boxscore:
1. The Wildcats seem to lack an actual runningback this year
2. Dan Persa is superman.

I want to see the shovel pass to Dunsmore off the option we saw in the Outback Bowl. Of course, we probably won’t bring out the real offense until Big Ten play. It reminds me of Dragon Ball Z where the big fight would go on for three or four episodes before the hero reveals that he’s been wearing a fifty pound training hat and only using half his power.
If anybody can yell until they start glowing yellow it would be Fitz.

82%
That’s the percentage of total yards that can be attributed to Dan Persa for tonight’s game. A good sign for him, not a good sign for the team.
i want another angle
i think he had the first down without the penalty, but the sec tv crew just whined and never showed a replay of where persa went out of bounds.
did anyone else watching a different feed get a look at that play?
A bit too clever
Thought our game-calling on the Offensive side was a bit too clever. Arby Fields was not served to well on those delay plays — just keep him going north and south. Ebert’s great, but Demetrius Fields, Sidney Stewart and Drake Dunsmore could’ve had more touches. Where was the dink and dunk? We need to be efficient offensively, as it enhances our defense — If we’re up 17-0, then it ratchets up the pressure on Vandy to score the next time round, and ultimately forces Vandy to be more one-dimensional (the pass, which is away from their bread and butter run).
I can live with giving up yards, cause this is a “takeaway” type defense, and there were 3 TOs that should’ve been had, which in turn would’ve changed the game.
Bright side — execution wise this was a “D” game. We had 5 penalties for 40 yards, and 3 of them were for offsides — and that’s a “bad” performance for us in terms of discipline. I take comfort in the fact that Fitz’s teams have improved as the season goes on in this respect.

My impressions
Passing game looked fine, the tiny bit we saw.
Dan Persa is the man. He did everything asked of him and much more.
Running backs: MDWM
The defense was on and off.
The way I see this offense, we should pass, pass, pass until the defense loses all belief in the run game. Our running threat should only appear in blurry photographs in National Inquirer. Then when they’re in the dime we can hit them with a dive or draw up the middle for 5+ yards. The option outside works sometimes, but for fuck’s sake, don’t run the zone read with Jacob Schmidt. The DE can stop, make sure Persa doesn’t have it, and still catch him from behind near the LOS.

Well uh...
1) We won
2) If this is the absolute best we are capable of doing, we’re in a lot of fucking trouble this year.
Go cats?

I Honestly Thought We'd Win This One By Three of Four Touchdowns...
We should be a lot better than Vandy, so this is kind of disappointing. But a win is a win is a win. Dan Persa was good, from what I can tell.
1-0. 11 more wins to go.
Honestly?
And how long have you been following the Cats? I never expect them to win by that much, even when they play a FBS opponent, like next week.
Hey
I wasn’t drunk when I tweeted that… I was hung over.
