Northwestern Wildcats vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Game Preview/Prediction Thread Time!

It's that time of the week, son, the time where we are optimistic for no reason and later it will make everything hurt.

Northwestern-Iowa has a recent history of being high level hilarity, and, well, although there's plenty of reasons to expect the outcome to be different, I think we can all assume that the way it will happen will be funny.

That aside, this game is huge. Northwestern is 0-2 in the Big Ten. With a loss to Iowa, we'll be 0-3. With a loss to the team that beat Iowa handily last week, we'll be 0-4. This game is the breaking point of crappiness. Luckily - or perhaps unluckily - Iowa is in the same boat we're in.

Jump for me and thems' predictions and then comment!

Iowa looks scary to a fan still recovering from two consecutive weeks of teams toasting the secondary with deep throws. Still, while Marvin McNutt will not be even remotely covered on most downs, Iowa also has shown no particular familiarity with defense. I'm expecting a shootout more reminiscent of Iowa's loss to Iowa State than their loss to Penn State. The difference is that Northwestern won't need overtime to put the Hawkeyes away. Northwestern wins, 42-31, and Hayden Fry's Moustache Ride pens a 10,000 word all-caps post at BHGP that consists entirely of expletives, names for Pat Fitzgerald, and the magic potato.

Northwestern 42, Iowa 31

I'm not just sippin' the purple drank this week, I'm chugging it. And in my purple haze, I'm going to pick NU to upset Iowa yet again. Fitz has my attention this week. Maybe it's because he let us step into his office. OK, technically, Mike Hall on BTN got invited to step into his office, but I'm charmed nonetheless. I'm believing Fitz when he says that changes are coming - in schemes, in personnel. Season's on the brink; we better be pulling out everything in the playbook we've got. The Fitz Intensity Meter should be off the charts this week. We've got an angry coach, a team with its back against the wall, an opponent we've pwned. This is a game the Wildcats better be up for. In Fitz I trust.

Northwestern, 31, Iowa, 20

Normally when these two teams face each other, at least one of them is good and in the top 25. That's usually Iowa, but back in 2000 it was Northwestern. And usually, the unranked team wins. But this year, both teams are playing poorly especially on defense. I'm still trying to figure out how the Iowa defense allowed themselves to be abused by Iowa State's Steele Jantz aka the poor man's Kain Colter. I'm also trying to figure out how Northwestern let Chase Rettig throw for nearly 400 yards and why they continually refuse to cover receivers down the field. Neither offense should have much of a problem in this one, so expect a fun, high scoring game. Sadly, I can't pick Northwestern in a road game against a team that can pass the ball well.

Iowa 31, Northwestern 28

We're quite lucky that Iowa isn't good, and by all outward appearances, the two teams we've lost to after holding early leads are quite good. But I look at Northwestern and I see a team without conviction. They're quite talented - talented enough to get leads on ranked teams - but defensively, this team can't put together a drive to save their lives. (Or a game, for that matter.) The coaches stressed that individual breakdowns, for a nth consecutive week, led to big plays that doomed Northwestern. The coaches also stressed that their play on third downs was pathetic, as evidenced by 13 out of 17 conversions. When you're bad at both a) giving up big plays and b) you're consistently being ground up on third downs by a better opponent, there is by definition nothing you're doing right on defense. I expect NU to go up big and lose again. I expect to post a GIF of Patrick Ward getting kneed in the balls Sunday. We will again marvel at Marvin McNutt is so open and note with great angst at what a poor passing quarterback is able to do against us. We will be Northwestern fans.

I quite literally have no idea

I could see just about any and every conceivable outcome in this game:

- Iowa blowout: Vandenberg to McNutt all night, a healthy dose of an angry Marcus Coker, Shaun Prater laying out receivers and/or picking off a pass or two, and a fired up Iowa crowd at a night game knowing this game means a lot both this season and to end Northwestern’s winning streaks (both overall and at Kinnick).

- Northwestern blowout: Dugar solidifies the secondary, the Iowa D-line can’t get to Persa who throws for 400+ yards and 3-4 TDs, the NU running game works by mixing in Colter/Smith much like the 1st half against Michigan, the NU defense plays stout against the run (much like they did against Illinois) and forces Vandenberg to beat them in the air and he can’t (throwing a couple picks), and Venric Mark makes a huge special teams return or two (maybe with Jeravin Matthews, who gets put back on kickoffs with Mark, replacing Schmidt, making KO returning all the more dangerous).

- Close game either way: see pretty much every game these teams have played since Fitz arrived. Why would this be any different?

So….no prediction from me. Just fandom. GO CATS!

NO, NONE OF THIS FANDOM BS

Address the topic. What’s your prediction?

by Herman on Oct 14, 2011 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

This is your new move?

Chad, So, now that this team has fallen below your expectations, you can’t make a prediction, win or loss. I have friends like you that do this, if a team they root for is expected to win, then say, err, i’m not sure, this could be close, blah, blah, blah, and don’t make a prediction. When a team is expected to lose, they give all these reasons why the team will win. Either way, it allows them to not have their expectations disappoint them.

Just saw the Cats are going to win, we all know you think that.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Oct 14, 2011 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Thank you.

I love that prediction, realistic, reasonable, and totally doable.

So, let me get this straight, you made a post solely to annoy me? Wow, I’m totally flattered, but what if I was out of town on the business trip that just got cancelled yesterday. You would have been hitting refresh all day waiting for me to give you a hard time, and you would have been so sad. I’m glad my posts motivate you so much.

Ohhh damn, Chad NU DJ is back in the house, DaRude’s Sandstorm or LMFAO’s Party Rock is blaring and the Cats are going to go on a 8 game winning streak (including winning a bowl)! All aboard, choo chooo!

Chad, nothing but peace and love for such a damn fan. Don’t have to curse and yell and get your panties in a bunch, we all know that you love the Cats, only see good things, and the program is heading north! Whoop whoop!

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Oct 14, 2011 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Ayan, what would it take for you to stop being a fan?

Maybe I shoudn’t ask, but seriously— by your metrics, NU has done little right. We’ve got a coach that you think is focused on all the wrong things. An AD more obsessed with marketing and compliance than winning. And to top it all off, both have signed contracts to be at NU through 2020!

So, barring some major administrative shift, you’ve got nine seasons after this one of gnashing your teeth, watching these two guys run NU into the ground. Why stay a fan when you obviously think the leadership is not only flawed but so entrenched that nothing will change?

by Herman on Oct 14, 2011 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I've thought about it many times Herman.

It is a fair question. If I didn’t go to NU and be VERY active with NU Alumni work both in DC and in Evanston, I would not feel this strongly about NU athletics. Since I went there, I want to be proud of our programs, and you are right, I just don’t feel that way right now.

I do feel that it could get better, but right now, I do not see it trending that way. I’m sorry my negativity has made you sad, but this is a message board where we can all give opinions.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Oct 14, 2011 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Jesus Christ, no wonder we haven't made a clutch field goal in the last decade.

Because you’re always moving the goalposts.

Seriously, it would be fantastic if, just one goddamn time, you would answer the question that’s posed to you instead of taking the conversation in a completely tangential direction that allows you to frame the narrative to your whim.

Herman asked what it would take for you to stop being for a fan. You didn’t answer that. Herman asked why you stay a fan when your outlook on almost every aspect of Northwestern, and not just the Wildcat athletics programs but the University as a whole, makes Estragon look like Dr. Pangloss. You didn’t answer that, either.

I’m sorry my negativity has made you sad, but this is a message board where we can all give opinions.

I love this sentence. In twenty words, it perfectly encapsulates (a) your total misreading, in more than one way, of the sentiments of the rest of the fanbase; (b) your arrogance, in thinking that you can “make” anybody anything; and © your penchant for attempting to use platitudinous non sequitur to wave away a shitstorm of your own creation.

Blind faith time, my friends, here’s my full prediction at HTP.

Ah

The Curse of Christensen still continues to haunt EIU.

by mikjones24 on Oct 14, 2011 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

How quickly you forget

EIU scored 21 (thanks to not covering wide open WR over the middle for a long catch and run and a garbage time brain fart by 3rd string who allowed a 76 yard run).

BUT, NU held a BCS AQ school to just 17!!!!!! (Nevermind that it was BC who have already lost to both Duke & Wake Forest (both at home) and got killed by UCF on the road)

I am going with the shootout theme because I refuse to believe in the NU defense until they do something of note (of course, they have a knack of coming out against Iowa, who they have held to 14.7 ppg in their current 3 game W streak).

You have seen our patented "don't cover the best receiver" scheme, right?

If McNutt has fewer than 150 yards receiving, he’s either hurt or there’s epic film work fail.

And yet … NU 28, Iowa 27, as Wizgerald finds a way to get Iowa to biff an extra point.

NU 31 - Iowa 24

I lowered Iowa’s score after seeing how anemic their offense is. But not too much given that NU has one of the worst defense’s in the Big Ten.

Iowa 37, NU 30

The Hawkeyes finally earn their W back. Or more accurately, it is graciously returned by our generous defense.

Hey man...

Are you a Fitz hater? It’s strange, b/c I feel you are one of the more negative posters about this team, but I wish you’d chime in more when it is a program discussion. I do agree w/your view about this team a lot though.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Oct 14, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you trying to start a club?

No, I’m not a Fitz hater, even though my posts have been critical at times. As I’ve said on multiple occasions, I think he’s the right man for the job right now. I do think he could do better, though, and am concerned that the current trajectory for the program seems to be trending in the wrong direction.

I do not view myself as particularly negative regarding the program; it’s light years better than when I was in school. I cheer em on every week, putting up my purple flag every Saturday morning (a flag my wife has started calling the “flag of shame.”). So I’m with them win or lose; I’d just rather they won than lost.

by buckyor on Oct 14, 2011 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok.

“am concerned that the current trajectory for the program seems to be trending in the wrong direction.”

I am 110% w/you. I am a Fitz hater, but I’ll take this as a start.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Oct 14, 2011 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

If you’re taking it as the first step to my hating Fitz, you may have to wait a while. I’m not in a rush to condemn him. He’s had some pretty good seasons since he’s taken over the team, and while I am concerned about the current downward path of the program (from 9 wins, to 8, to 7, to ?), I also think he ought to be (and will be) given the opportunity to right the ship.

I also don’t expect him (or anyone else) to have the program winning B1G titles every year, or in contention for the MNC. We’re not Alabama or LSU or Oklahoma. We’re not USC. We’re not Wisconsin or Ohio State. And our expectations cannot be the same as at those places. If they are, we will never meet them, because I don’t think that annual conference championships and BCS championship game appearances are a realistic goal for this program. Hell, those aren’t realistic goals for about 115 of the 120 FBS teams.

What I do want are consistent winning seasons, regular bowl appearances and victories, and occasionally competing for the conference crown. And I want this within the academic standards that the University has maintained to date. I think that’s realistic and achievable, and I think that’s a significant improvement over what we’ve seen in the past.

I believe that Fitz can get us to that point. He’s gotten off to a pretty decent start, this season notwithstanding. There is absolutely no question the program is in better shape than it was when I arrived on campus in 1981.

Nice summation

I agree 100% although I am generally more positive on the ‘Cats at this moment, but you summed up NU’s situation nicely. Sometimes it is hard to get some of these points through to some commenters out there.

Agree w/JHodges.

I think we all have different opinions, but sometimes instead of getting wrapped up in who is saying it, if we all read the comments as a pure comment, I think there would be more agreement.

Thank you

I should note that while my mind does not expect the Cats to win, my heart is with them 100%. The flag will be up, and I’ll be in my living room (with my Miller products) cheering myself hoarse trying to get them to prove me wrong.

I can't believe I'm doing this.

And in my heart of hearts, I know that it’s time to Iowa to beat us.

But I’m going to this game. And I’m 2-0 on official band trips in the B1G. That’s trending in the positive direction, right?

Dont have a good feeling about todays game Iowa 35- Cats 28

As some of you know I am usually fairly optimistic and try to see the bright side, but just don’t think we can win today. The last 2 losses have hurt the teams confidence and we will need everything to go right on the road, which probably wont happen as the defense has been disappointing to say the least in squandering the leads in the 1st 2 big ten games. I will be watching and hoping, but do not have high expectations.
