Northwestern Wildcats, 59, Indiana Hoosiers, 38, Postgame Thread

Touchdowns! Touchdowns for everybody!

Northwestern won its first Big Ten game by running rampant over the truly horrendous Indiana defense for 59 points. (It could have been more.) Drake Dunsmore caught four touchdowns, Jacob Schmidt had 100 yards rushing, and Kain Colter had 100 yards receiving, and, well, none of those are typos. It's good to know that despite the 0-5 slide, Northwestern is capable of winning a game, and handily at that. NU gave up the first touchdown, but it wasn't really in doubt after NU ran off 24 straight. NU's defense looked shaky - they gave up 38 points to Indiana and allowed 319 - 319! - yards rushing, but, it didn't really matter as the offense was unreal.

More importantly, this means I don't have to follow through on my vow to turn Northwestern into a Grantland-esque site for long form essays about Gossip Girl. Maybe if we lose to Rice.

My thoughts:

Dennis Green won Big Ten Coach of the Year. Pat Fitzgerald hasn't. Therefore, D-Green > Fitz. QED, motherf***ers.

understood

I understand the meh. But really, a 21 point big ten win on the road while putting up 59 that could be have been more. We need to be glad this did not come down to the wire like the usual NU win against an overmatched team.

The defense needs so much work, from fundamentals to scheme to energy it’s alarming. I still don’t like the end of the first half taking a knee. That tells you how little confidence I have in the D. If NU doesn’t score in the first drive of the second panic could have taken over and it could have been another blown game.

It is a Big Ten win.

3-5 (1-4) is better than where NU was a week ago. Let’s assume NU beats Rice and Minnesota, pretty reasonable assumption. Who can NU beat between @ Neb or home MSU?

I don’t see either, but I’m sure Chad has a lengthy explanation about how NU can win both. It probably highlights NU’s punter.

Well...

…MSU looked pretty bad today against Nebraska in all phases. I don’t have any delusions that we have a defense remotely good enough to shut down MSU’s offense, but MSU laying eggs in road games has to be a concern at this point.

And with Nebraska hosting us between this week’s MSU beatdown, and next week’s battle against Penn State….can you say trap game?

(That being said, we should be heavy underdogs in both, and likely will lose both. But if our offense clicks like today, maybe we could steal a win in a track meet….)

I kinda agree.

I do think NU could be a trap game, but I think over the course of the game, Nebraska’s skills will just dominate.

Of the two, I completely agree about MSU’s road game woes, this team has continued to disappoint year in and year out, everytime someone says, watch MSU, this happens. Since it is the last game of the season, I do think they will be motivated for Big Ten placement/bowl bids, so they might not lay the same egg.

If you're going to make stupid, pointless, unfunny, repetitive jokes

about Chad’s optimism, punting, and/or how much you hate NU football, you could at least do Brandon Williams the courtesy of referring to him by name.

Watching the Minnesota-Iowa game

Gopher players are going crazy on the sidelines. ’Cats need some of that energy.

Any word

on who they’re targeting with the No. 1 draft pick?

by Herman on Oct 29, 2011 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Gunner Kiel staying in HS

Not sure now that Gunner Kiel decided to stay in HS to avoid being drafted by the Hoosiers.

The late night open thread to talk about all the other games going on. So much to yap about in both Wisconsin vs. OSU and Stanford vs. USC.
