Northwestern 28, Rice 6: Postgame Thread
Jeremy Ebert had a monster game, Dan Persa threw for a lot of yards, and the defense played really well, shutting out Rice until a garbage time TD with 4 minutes left. I didn't actually get to see these things because the game wasn't on television in Boston, but it sounded good on the radio.
Northwestern won so easily that even Alex Daniel made an appearance, although he promptly fumbled to set up Rice's only touchdown, so that was too bad. Overall, the game was extraordinarily boring because there was never any doubt Northwestern would win, but that sure beats losing to a bad team.
One more win for bowl eligibility. Go Cats.

OSU scores a TD to tie the game.
Purdue blocks the PAT. HAHAHAHA.
Oh, and go ’Cats, and stuff. I guess.
Dennis Green won Big Ten Coach of the Year. Pat Fitzgerald hasn't. Therefore, D-Green > Fitz. QED, motherf***ers.

Purdue wins in OT -- sweet
but bad for us bowl-game-wise
Not that bad
If PU becomes bowl-elgible, they’re almost certainly going to Detroit, and I prefer to go to a bowl game elsewhere (which is highly likely at 6-6). Let’s cheer on Rutgers (against Army) and SMU (against Navy).

or
we could just go 7-5 and not have to worry about it
7-5 maybe
I don’t think we win many split decisions. We’d need a lot of conferences to not fill their guaranteed slots for us to get a 6-6 slot. After seeing Sparty today, however, I don’t know how likely that is for us to get up to 7-5.
Actually
Considering that our competition for open bowl slots will likely be BE, MAC, and Sun Belt schools, I think we’d actually win most desirability contests.
True
More referring to the fact that the B1G has 8 guaranteed slots with a likely 10 eligible teams, presuming Purdue beats IU. But yeah, if there are open slots, we’ve got a decent shot, no doubt.
Too many bowl permutations
There are already eight bowl eligible teams in the B10, filling up its bowl schedule (since there will likely be no 2d BCS game this year). Purdue will surely beat Indiana and go 6-6, and it may beat Iowa next week as well. The way that Iowa and Illinois are playing, one or both of them may end up with only six wins, but if one of them (or Purdue) goes 7-5, and we do too, that may lock up the Pizza bowl for us. So, there are arguments to favor 6-6 for NU, but let’s just win out and go wherever. We have had way too many close games against Minny and need to spank Sparty. I’d just as soon beat them both, regardless of whether we go to a bowl or not. Being 4-4 in the conference and 7-5 overall is better than 6-6 and some crappy bowl.

could happen!
There’s a very real scenario that puts us in the Gator: we’d have to finish out at 7-5 (tough but believable now), and have OSU and Iowa lose out (a good chance for both cases) to end up 6-6 each, and have 2 B1G teams in the BCS (less likely but quite possible). Since I believe Insight picks before them this year, that would leave the Gator selecting from NU, Purdue, or an Illinois team thats been a hot mess since October. Maybe they could still take a 6-6 Ohio State or Iowa team that hasn’t won in months, if its clear the 7-5 teams will be taken care of by other B1G bowls, but its not a given that they’d prefer the bummed out huge fan bases with the troubled teams to the excited smaller fan bases with high functioning teams. Probably still wouldn’t happen, but that’s the most prestigious bowl still on our table.

Kupe...
is Drogba-esque. Just a physical beast out there.
First time I’ve seen our boys play all year. I like watching footy — but I prefer EPL, and I’ll barely tolerate MLS (Let’s go Fire!). That being said, watching this game is akin to watching a 1st round FA Cup match on Fox Soccer Plus. Shoddy lookin’ field, jerseys without sponsor logos and kick and run.
Close this out, ’Cats!

yeah
not a high level of play, but still cool to watch. EPL’s great an all, but I completely tune it out during football season.

Yeah...
as much as I dig EPL — found this season to be kinda boring. But, yeah, NCAA isn’t that high lvel.
