Northwestern Men's Soccer wins Big Ten Championship

Other sports! (Normally Herman's cup of tea, but let me jump in.)

Northwestern men's soccer won its first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship just after winning its first ever regular season Big Ten Championship today by knocking off Penn State, and it was on the TV so I watched it. No. 7 PSU didn't win a game in conference but took an early lead on a score by Minh Vu, whose name got said an alarming amount of times, beating Big Ten freshman of the year/first team goalkeeper Tyler Miller near post from outside the box. But after coming back from a 1-0 deficit in the semis against Indiana, NU was again resilient: Senior forward Oliver Kupe went down in the box, prompting a PK goal by Peter O'Neill. Then, on a counterattack, Nick Gendron won the ball in midfield and played a beautiful pass up to Oliver Kupe, who only had one man to beat and made his finish look easy. From there, it was 11 minutes for the W and the Big Ten Championship, sealing a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

I covered NU men's soccer my sophomore year, and although most of the dudes on that team are gone - essentially besides Kupe - and it's a program that kind of goes unnoticed. Lots of us watch soccer and play FIFA, few of us take time to go out to Lakeside Field to take in a college soccer game. So let's take a moment to congratulate a pretty good team on their best season ever and an awesome tourney run. Congrats to the Cats and good luck in the NCAA Tournament.
