Big Ten Basketball Previews: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Better late than never, it's time for the award-winning Big Ten basketball previews! Rather than alphabetical order like last year, these will instead be in order of projected finish in conference play, from worst to first. That way, the entire internet will be on the edge of their seat for weeks waiting for all the dramatic reveals, and I can win another award.

10th place: Nebraska Cornhuskers

What did they do last year? In their Big 12 swan song, Nebraska finished 19-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play. They got onto the NCAA bubble in mid-February after upsetting Texas, but lost four of their last five and ended up in the NIT, where they were blown in the first round by eventual champion Wichita State.

Who'd they lose from last year? As far as I can tell, the only loss of any significance is point guard Lance Jeter, who led the team in minutes played, scoring, assists, steals, calm eyes, clutch hits, sexing Hollywood starlets, and intangibles (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.) Jokes aside, Jeter was their best offensive player last season and probably a lock-down defender based on his 2.4 steals per game, so he'll clearly be missed.

Star-divide

Tell me more about Nebraska basketball in general: This is the part where I admit I've barely seen Nebraska play, so unlike the rest of the Big Ten where I know their rosters inside and out, I'm basically making educated guesses here based on their KenPom page. However, that won't stop me from pretending to be an expert. A few facts:

- Nebraska hasn't made the NCAA tournament since 1998, and they've never won an NCAA tournament game in their history. They have made the NIT six times in the past thirteen seasons.

- Their coach is Doc Sadler, who's entering his sixth season. Coaching defense appears to be his strong suit, as Nebraska has been in the top 25 nationally in defensive efficiency three times in the last four years. Unfortunately, they've struggled on offense under Sadler, never finishing higher than 78th nationally and falling to as low as 142nd. They've consistently played at a slow place and been among the worst teams nationally in offensive rebounding, indicating that Sadler has them to retreat after missed shots to prevent fast breaks for the opponent.

I've heard a lot of people say that Nebraska will fit right into the Big Ten with their slow paced defensive style, but I think that works against them since Big Ten teams are so used to playing against that style. A fast paced pressing team like Missouri would probably have a lot of success early as teams adjusted to something they hadn't seen much before.

- Sadler likes to go deep into his bench, as he played 10 guys more than 10 minutes per game last year and only Jeter averaged more than thirty. He's also gone heavy on the transfers, JUCOs, and foreigners, as such players account for seven of the seventeen guys on the roster.

So who will replace Jeter as the leading scorer? I see two possibilities. One is big man Jorge Brian Diaz, their leading returning scorer (10.5 points per game). He went by Brian Diaz as a freshman but apparently added the Jorge his sophomore year, so he's got that going for him. He's not a great rebounder (4,4 per game, same as the much smaller Jeter), but is a decent shot blocker at 1.3 per game.

The other potential leading scorer is LSU transfer Bo Spencer, who put up one of the most chuckeriffic shooting lines I've ever seen as a junior at LSU in 2009-10: 38% on twos, 28% on threes, and absurd 27,5% of available shots. He also had more turnovers than assists: pass the rock, son. In fairness to Spencer, that LSU team was terrible and he may have been forced to shoot more than he preferred, and he did hit 40% of his threes the year before shooting at a more reasonable volume, so if he can harness his game he could be a dangerous scorer. According to Nebraska's website though, he's the front-runner to start at point guard, which can't be a good thing.

Who else do they have? A whole bunch of role players. Senior guards Toney McCray and Caleb Walker are three point threats, while senior Brandon Richardson was the backup point guard last year. Brandon Ubel and Andre Almeida provide depth in the post; Ubel appears to be the kind of big man who minces about on the perimeter, while Almeida claims the title of fattest player in the Big Ten, checking in at 6'11", 315 pounds. Despite having large man-boobs, Almeida led Nebraska in rebounds per minute last season and averaged 3.5 blocks per 40 minutes, but couldn't stay on the floor due to his 6 fouls per minutes. There are a few more guys I could talk about, but I'm losing interest rapidly, here's their roster if you're interested.

When does Northwestern play them? Just once, in Evanston in early February. Have to give the edge to Northwestern at home in that one.

Overall record prediction? Their non-conference schedule is pretty weak: the toughest game is a trip to Valley favorite Creighton. 9-2 seems reasonable. In the Big Ten, I think this team continues their offensive struggles, but I could be completely wrong since I know very little about this team. Really, I think 7th to 10th in the Big Ten is wide open between four likely NIT teams and you could slot them in any order, and the random number generator in my brain settled on Nebraska in 10th. We'll give them 6-12 in the league for a 15-14 overall record.

This is the lamest team ever.

I see them finishing 11th, but good lord. No one cares about Neb bball, and I wish they just abolished the program.

I agree, Neb at home is a win for NU.

They should abolish your ability to post

I mean, come on… Yeah, Nebraska Basketball isn’t exactly a strong suit, but Northwestern isn’t exactly a powerhouse, either.

Stay thirsty, my friends.

No one cares?

That seems a little harsh. These guys seemed to care a little bit. As for abolishing the program, can you remind me the last time NW made the NCAA tournament? Not trying to troll, but saying a school should abolish a program is pretty stupid. The argument could be made about NW’s, right?

As for the preview overall, you’re probably right. Anywhere from 7-10 does not seem out of the question. Nebraska’s defense is fairly outstanding, and while that slow-it-down mentality is what everyone says the B1G is about, I think you’ll be surprised at how frustrating it is when Nebraska takes it to the next level – scoring less than 50 is not out of the question, and you could still win with that score. We lost Jeter, so replacing ballhandling is a big question mark, but I’ve heard good things about Richardson and Spencer. Nebraska has a lot of athletic department and booster support right now. They will knock somebody good off this year, get on the bubble, and blow it.

It's not worth it, KH.

Just read any other thread on this site. It’s not worth it.

Looking forward to seeing UNL hoops come to Evanston this winter!

Oh, I see

Thanks for the heads up. I am actually really excited for basketball, which is saying something because as you probably can relate to, it’s super hard to get excited for losing. Still, Nebraska is finally pouring money into the program which proves to fans and recruits we mean business. It should pay off eventually… most likely with firing Doc, but here’s his chance.

First off.

I didn’t realize how school fans read my posts. So, please don’t think I’m trying to diss Neb. Nebraska bball is like PSU ball, so far down the chain that no one cares.

Do I really think they should abolish the program? No, but I kinda wish they would.

In terms of NU bball, you will not find a bigger Carmody hater than me, and I’m not here to defend NU’s bball history b/c it is simply too hard to justify how bad it has been.

C'mon 2002

You were on a roll lately with some decent non-trolling posts. This … isn’t one of them.

by RotoJeff on Nov 2, 2011 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea RJ

I didn’t realize this would cause a stir. Nebraska when in the Big XII seemed like one of those irrelvant Big XII teams.

Hell, the same could be say about NU.

Bigger Platform?

Even though Big 12 hoops has arguably been stronger than the B1G lately, I wonder if the move in conferences will prompt Nebraska to invest more in their hoops program. We as a conference obviously draw more eyes, due to the BTN and the better national tv deals. I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually this program gets better.

This already started

Here is the new practice facility: http://www.huskers.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?&&db_oem_id=100&id=720919&DB_MENU_ID=&SPSID=20&SPID=24&DB_OEM_ID=100

Here are plans for the new arena: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=204989029

They are not messing around in Nebraska anymore. Sadler is a good not great coach, but he gets the most out of what he has had to work with. They work the international scene a lot, and they pick up JuCo kids a lot. I hope this pushes them to get better overall recruiting classes.

Ohh no.

Our facilities are below Nebraska’s. Ohh no, NU fans start the excuses now about how we can’t win b/c of the facilities.

BTW, that new arena looks very cool.

Personally

I think Sadler is a good fundamentals and gameday coach. I think he’s much less good at recruiting and I think he’s hard on his players, as we’ve been decimated by transfers over his tenure.

In any case, I like him. He’s a good representative of the University, he takes nobody really caring about basketball in stride and he does a reasonable amount with not very much. The expectations do rise with the new arena and the levy the Lincoln taxpayers passed to fund it.

Good stuff

Thanks for the info.

Do you follow college baseball as well? Nebraska is in an interesting spot there – clear conference downgrade, yet they hired a high-profile manager in Erstad, suggesting that they’re trying to make a push there.

by RotoJeff on Nov 2, 2011 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

erstad?

you mean former nebraska punter darin erstad? haven’t heard of him in the past 20-ish years. also, what’s baseball? i only pay attention to special teams.

by Rodger Sherman on Nov 2, 2011 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I love baseball!

Well, I love sports, and since Nebraska has only so many sporting events to attend I end up following them all. You are correct in Nebraska being in a tenuous spot with baseball. The B1G is not a baseball conference… at all. The thing is, with the CWS in Omaha, and an amazing baseball facility, it has become a fan favorite of sorts. Osborne could not let that slip because fans would be angry about it (if you haven’t noticed, nobody in Nebraska takes to kindly to being less than they expect… it’s a problem we’re working through). So, when Anderson, the last coach, finished awfully down the stretch again last season, Osborne pulled the trigger and fired him.

This is where most baseball pundits are torn. Is Erstad that high a profile hire? His only coaching is volunteering on last year’s team as a hitting consultant. He’s never recruited, made managerial decisions, or had to face the press when things go bad. He was also super cheap (so much so that he hired two of the top assistants in the college game) because he is, “financially stable.” Years of MLB all-star caliber baseball does that for a guy living in small-ish town Nebraska. Still, he’s Darin Erstad!

Personally, the hire is probably the best case scenario for all parties involved. Nebraska is downgrading conferences which leads to tougher recruiting. Now we have three amazing coaches, one of which is a MLB all-star, who will preach fundamental ball and getting to the pros. Even if he is terrible, we’re giving him a chance to compete. I can get behind that, and if Nebraska wins every B1G title from here on out, I could get behind that too. I think that was the AD’s hope as well.

Love college baseball

I went to HS in Wichita, so I saw plenty of Wichita State games when I was there.

You guys produced Alex Gordon, among others, so I can see where the expectations come from.

The southern and western states were always dominant in college baseball, but as the sport has grown, the B1G has really fallen behind. Michigan used to be a pretty good baseball school, but yeah, we’re well behind most conferences. No wonder Delaney really pushed for a restructuring of the CWS (which is an awesome event – wish I could go there in person at some point). Glad he was rebuffed, even if it hurts my conference.

Thanks again for the info.

by RotoJeff on Nov 2, 2011 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Right on

Seriously, hit me up if you can get to Omaha for the CWS. It’s worth the trip, and there are always ways to get tickets. The new stadium is gorgeous, and although I missed the games this season, I’ve heard nothing but solid things about every seat. College baseball is a blast, and the ‘ping’ of the bats is just awesome.

Erstad's working for peanuts...

and we take baseball seriously regardless of the conference switch. The difference this year for us is that we’ll pretty much be orienting our program around the post season more as well as beefing up the non conference schedule to make up for the loss of the good baseball programs we’re leaving behind.

Hopefully the B1G will improve in baseball as time goes on instead of ceding the conference to us. I remember there was a time some good teams came out of the Big Ten back in the day (Michigan loitered around the CWS for a few years in the 70s and early 80s) and we’re proof that you can have a great program north of South Padre island, although our “greatness” has been a bit tarnished in the last few seasons (hence the Erstad hire).

by Drone on Nov 3, 2011 12:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Just read your preview.

I gotta say, despite the humor at our guys expense (which is expected and not really offensive), I have to admit that you hit it pretty damn close. Nice job, even with having admitted that you haven’t watched much.

The only thing I’d offer up is that Diaz probably won’t be leading the team in scoring. He’s just not a scorer, not to mention he’ll have his hands full with the B1G post players.

No, we’ll most likely see either McCray..or hopefully Spencer or Talley step up. The reason being that Doc knows he has been lacking in the back court for the last few years, so he’s really moving guys into that position that can flat out score points.

Football is king in Nebraska. But you’d be surprised at how many fans will support them, and you may also be surprised at how well they do in the new league.

Decent review from the State Dept's third favorite finishing school.

Cripes, I almost forgot this is the one fanbase we have to use UNL in order to communicate clearly.

Pretty good review for someone who’s not familiar with UNL. I think the B1G is pretty open from 5-10/11 (Iowa has some potential in its incoming class that could surprise people insisting they should be 11). Our traditional achilles heel are teams with high end athletes who just simply leap around like dunking gazelles on a cocaine bender (KU, for instance). UNLs ability to slide up the standings this year depend mostly on Diaz auditioning for the Puerto Rican men’s team (solid chance he may leave us next year for that) and the health of his feet, Ubel playing in the paint as well as he was the last quarter of last season, and obviously Spencer’s quality of play replacing Jeter. If SPencer holds his own, Ubel continues, and Diaz is healthy and motivated, we’ll be a very tough out this year.

Should be a fun season. One thing we’ll have to adjust to is the fan quality in the B1G, which is considerably better than our old home. If there’s a situation that will give us problems, it’ll be the liveliness of the home courts of even mediocre teams. My hope is that you guys inspire our students to start picking up their games. It’s been a weak spot with us for quite a few years.

See you in Evanston and good luck in your season, Cats!
