Northwestern versus Texas A&M in Houston: The Matchup

So now that we know that Northwestern jumped into the Meineke Car Care Bowl, its time to start thinking about Texas A&M. What should we expect from the currently-but-not-for-long-Big 12 Aggies? Hint: I don't expect much punting.

Star-divide

Record: 6-6 (4-5)

A&M comes in with the same record as NU, but you shouldn't be deceived by it. The Aggies lost to the following teams: Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Those aren't all great teams, but there isn't a bad team in the bunch. Their only really impressive win was at home over Baylor, but then Northwestern's only impressive win was on the road against Nebraska. Furthermore, Texas A&M played only FBS opponents. Not all of them were good, but they deserve recognition for playing a difficult OOC opponent (Arkansas) and avoiding an FCS game. As Rodger said earlier, Texas A&M is probably the best 6-6 team in the country.

Stats of both advanced and non-advanced types

Note that some of the advanced stats may change due to opponent adjustments even though Texas A&M was idle this weekend.

Any way you look at it, the Aggies have an impressive offense. They average 497 yards and 39.6 points per game with an even run-pass split. They sit at 16th in FEI and 19th (15th rushing, 35th passing) in S&P+. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has a nice 7.0 YPA working for him, and running backs Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael (UPDATE: Michael is injured and won't play) both average over 5 YPC. There isn't much else to say.

It is on the defensive side of the ball that the difference between advanced and traditional statistics becomes obvious. Allowing 386 yards and 28.7 points per game doesn't look very good until you look back at the teams A&M faced. A defense that is 76th in the country in points allowed is a respectable 35th in FEI and 20th (15th rushing and 22nd passing) in S&P+. Northwestern still should be able to move the ball well, but don't be surprised when the A&M defense looks like more than a nuisance.

Overall, the Aggies are a good example of why the Big 12's offense-only reputation is exaggerated. They also are a testament to how deep the Big 12 is this year: in addition to all the above stats, Chase Stuart's SRS has them as the third team in the Big 12-at 12th in the country! While the offense is clearly the strength of the team, the defense suffers noticeably in traditional measures from their brutal schedule. Expect NU to need to work a bit to move the ball, and hope that the NU defense can somehow manage a few stops.

Style

Texas A&M is one of the small group of college teams that base out of a 3-4 front. This will present something of a challenge to the NU offense, but hopefully the extra time gives them time to prepare for the more complex blitzes and stunts expected out of this style of defense. The A&M defense is more vulnerable to the big play than to sustained drives (55th in FEI's "explosive drives" measure but 12th in "methodical drives") I would expect them to spend most of the game in a nickel package; as far as I can tell, they use both a 2-4-5 and a 3-3-5 for this purpose.

Offensively, the Aggies look kind of like you expect a former NFL coach's team to look: they are balanced, use a variety of formations, and don't run the quarterback a ton (55 carries for Tannehill) though he is a fairly effective runner when they do (5.4 YPC). They have a 1000 yard receiver (Ryan Swope on 81 catches) and a 1000 yard rusher (Cyrus Gray on 198 carries), but they also have another running back with over 100 carries (Christine Michael with 149 for 899 yards (UPDATE: as above, Michael is injured and will not play) and a couple other receivers with decent numbers (Jeff Fuller is their second receiver with 63 receptions for 709 yards; the excellently named Uzoma Nwachukwu is third with 45 for 572). The NU defense needs to be ready for I-formation running, spread passing, and anything in between. This does not inspire confidence.

Intangibles

The biggest question mark heading into this game has to do with Texas A&M's coaching situation. They just fired head coach Mike Sherman, best known for wasting several of Brett Favre's prime years and all of Ahman Green's in Green Bay, handing the interim reins to defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter. With an interim head coach in place and a search for a permanent coach underway, I don't think anybody knows how the Aggies will respond to the long layoff. We will have to wait a month to find out.

I'm curious.

This is not meant to be hostile or combative, but I’m really curious.

- How many posters on here are going to go to the bowl game?
- Of those, how many other bowl games have you been to?

I think attendance will be better this year than last year, because last year the team came off two losses, injury to Persa, lackluster matchup, poor timing. This year is a marquee (relatively speaking) opponent, better timing, and the team rebounded from 2-5 to 6-6. But, I was a little shocked to see how poor the attendance was the last couple of home games, so it is hard to tell.

Full disclosure: I have not been to any NU bowl games, was planning on going to the 2000-2001 Alamo Bowl game, but family obligations did not oblige. Going forward, I will never go to a bowl game unless it is a BCS game, but that is just me.

In terms of the game, I find every game outside the national title/BCS games to be exhibitions, but as a close friend once said, “If both teams are going to play, you might as well win.” I do think with TAMU’s firing of Sherman, NU will be able to take advantage of the transition and finally get a bowl win. While I give this NU team a C-/D+, that is a far upgrade from my grade of F- at one point this season. I do think a bowl game victory could be a nice ending to an unique season.

haven't figured it out

have to figure out financial/logistical issues before going, but i would love to. i previously went to the outback bowl two years ago. this is a better bowl against a better team than last year, so it will likely draw better.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 4, 2011 6:59 PM CST up reply actions

Went to both Alamo Bowls, and Outback Bowl

….but due to wedding savings plan/timing, there’s no way I can go to this bowl (I’d love to do a Houston bowl game, too….ironically, I was the one Cats fan rooting for Motor City Bowl, since I could have done a quick road trip to Detroit).

Ayan, no offense, but you’re truly missing out if you only want to go to BCS games. I understand the theory, and I know financially and timing-wise bowls are difficult for some people to do, but honestly — they’re a TON of fun, regardless of the “prestige” of the bowl. Alamo Bowls were ridiculous fun (game outcome notwithstanding) hanging on the Riverwalk and high-fiving Cats fans everywhere…..Outback Bowl was great, too (went with my family, since it was an hour from my folks’ place in Florida). And in each case, it was a ton of fun meeting opposing fans. I’m sure those who are headed to Houston will have a great time with the Texas A&M fans….

Very cool.

Chad, I know, but it is my personal stance against college fb bowl system. I want a playoffs, and i know if I feed into the lesser bowls, it is feeding the system. I know, kinda silly of me.

But, I heard how much fun the Alamo Bowl was, and sometimes I wish I was there.

But, even being a large Carmody hater, I can assure you if NU makes the tournament and they are playing anywhere in the Northeast region (DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, Providence, Boston, etc), I will be there.

by Rodger Sherman on Dec 4, 2011 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

the thing about playoffs

is they won’t (most likely) get rid of any of the lesser bowls. There’s too much money in it. It’s even possible that they’ll add more. So the way I figure you might as well go because they are a blast.

I'm shocked to learn that Ayan...

…is all talk, hiding behind his Internet posts and never actually making a single one of Northwestern’s seven bowl games in the last 12 seasons. What a fan.

by eatingcornthelongway on Dec 5, 2011 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

To defend him...

….bowl games are tough on the budget, and all our games have been on tough dates if you have family/travel for the holidays. I don’t begrudge or question anyone’s fandom if they can’t afford to shell out for a bowl game….it’s simply not something everyone can afford, in either time or money or both.

That being said, I would hope that Ayan would reconsider his “BCS or bust” plan….those other bowls are/can be a lot of fun.

by Chadnudj on Dec 5, 2011 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

No defense needed.

Chad, don’t worry. It’s not a budget issue more than a desire issue.

Like I said, it is a bit silly, but I don’t want to feed the system.

To undefend him...

…he’s a loudmouth b*tch who has never backed up his yapper once, ever, in his entire life, about anything. He never went to the games when he was a student; he’s never gone to the games as an alumni [sic — alumni is plural, dumbass]. But as much as our attendance sucks, I think everyone is glad that Ryan Field sells that one fewer ticket every game.

It's because he's trolling.

Poorly. Quick, eatingcornthelongway, who do you think should start at QB next year? Should Jeremy Ebert have been first team All Big Ten? What changes would you make to the coaching procedures next year? Do /you/ care about this team at all?

OK

For once, I think a dual QB system makes sense. No, Ebert didn’t deserve 1st team. I think Hankwitz should be replaced. Yes.

Look at all my special insights!

Next time Ayan meets up for one of his hoops-watching sessions, ask him to name 15 players on the team off the top of his head. No Internet cheating. I would bet my life he couldn’t do it.

For a guy who really ‘hates me’ and thinks ’I’m not knowledgable about sports, NU sports, or NU athletics’, he sure spends a lot of time criticizing me.

Also, I don’t need to sit here and defend me knowledge of sports to him, but I do welcome a honest conversation with via any medium.

OK

How many games have you attended in the last decade? How many games have you watched start-to-finish this year? How many times have you posted to this site without resorting to ignorant, obnoxious trolling commentary? (For an example, see the first comment on this thread.)

My guesses: zero, two, and zero.

by eatingcornthelongway on Dec 6, 2011 9:18 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Not to perpetuate this debate at all....

…but zero games in the past decade, NUACo2002? Really? That’s kinda shocking to me.

Now, don’t get me wrong — I’m in no way questioning your fandom, since you obviously are passionate about the Cats (even if we disagree a lot). And i guess it’s understandable, I suppose, for those who don’t live in Chicago-land to not get to many Northwestern games (and I believe you don’t – I think you’re somewhere in the Atlantic Northeast), and I know people get busy have plans…..but in the past decade there have been road games at Navy, at Syracuse, at Army, at Penn State, at Duke, at Boston College, at Nashville, at Houston….plus the bowls….

I don’t know. Just a bit surprised you haven’t been to a game since you graduated (the last football games you would have seen given your handle would have been fall of 2001)….

by Chadnudj on Dec 6, 2011 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

How many games did you attend when you were an undergrad?

In person, actual attendance at Ryan Field. My guess? Two per year, tops.

by eatingcornthelongway on Dec 6, 2011 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

Wrong.

My freshman year, I attended about 5 games, soph – 4-5, junior year 5 (plus road game), senior year about 4 games.

Does attending games in-person mean that I’m a better or worse fan to you?

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Dec 6, 2011 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

Sure, fair criticism.

I live in Washington, D.C., so getting back to Chicago doesn’t happen too often. I went back from my 1st, 5th, and this upcoming year for my 10th reunion, so I might go to the game then.

But, let me be clear, I like watching college football, basketball, etc, on TV, I find myself being able to watch the sports more, replays, etc. So, even if I lived in the Chicago area, I’m not sure how many games I would actually attend.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Dec 6, 2011 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

Not to interrupt the feeding

Based on his comment history (two other blogs with a few comments and none recently) I see no reason to believe that this guy is anything but a random troll. Now, back to your regularly scheduled troll feeding.

by MountainTiger on Dec 6, 2011 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

I guess

I’m a random troll if you mean that I like calling out message board morons when their level of stupidity is just unbearable. See Iowa, The University of.

The message here is that NU Graduates — Class of 2002 is a phony. He loves NU football, but he never goes to games, even when he’s in town, because he prefers watching on TV? He has the time and money to travel to bowl games, but doesn’t want to support non-BCS bowl games? Makes perfect sense. Next he’s going to tell us that he purposefully avoids donating to Northwestern because the school/athletic department/whatever isn’t winning enough and doesn’t deserve his money. But when he’s not glued to the TV watching his favorite NU teams he’s hitting the message boards from his mom’s basement, reminding us all how much his favorite team sucks donkey dicks. What a guy!

Wake up. His entire existence on this board is to say stupid, stupid shit and get a reaction. Apparently he’s very bored with his life. Whatever. The fact that some of you still interact with him is what baffles me. Now that we’ve established that he’s a fraud, hopefully he’ll keep his hairy clam closed a little more often and people will realize that (a) he’s a moron, completely uninformed and lacking all credibility, and (b) if we can all just ignore him, maybe he’ll go away.

I will not have anything further to say about or to NU Graduates — Class of 2002, and I suggest you all do the same.

Been to all except the '49 Rose and '00 Alamo

They’re all a lot of fun. It’s just a good excuse to go someplace where there is a little sunshine right when winter is starting to rear its ugly head in Chicago (in the case of the Motor City Bowl, I was home in Detroit for the holiday anyway and it was the perfect day after Christmas event to attend). The best part about the game itself is the fan atmosphere – those that are at the game really want to be there and bring a lot of energy with them, both NU and the opposing team. It’s an opportunity to see some marquee programs that we probably aren’t ever going to be able to schedule during the regular season, and because of the split crowd dynamic, you really get to experience the traditions of the opposing team. You should give it a try.

by GTom on Dec 5, 2011 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

I understand the bowl curse now!

Northwestern’s has been perpetually losing bowl games because our team’s good luck charm, NUACo2002, hasn’t been there! It all makes sense now.

But seriously, I don’t understand the “I refuse to go to bowl games unless [ _ ]” attitude. The system is unfair, the names are stupid, the bowls are all about money, winning the low-level [Corporate Sponsor] Bowl of [Location] doesn’t really mean anything… but some variation of all of those can be said about this entire corrupt system of college athletics.

I’m a sports fan, in spite of all that’s detestable about college athletics, because I love Northwestern, I enjoy watching good athletic performances, and I like having fun. Bowl games are an opportunity to… express my love of Northwestern, watch some pretty good matchups, and have fun in a new and interesting place. No reason at all to boycott bowls, even the low-level, stupidly-named ones.

As for my bowl attendance— Alamo 2008, Outback 2010, TicketCity 2011, all with NUMB. I’d be in Houston (or Detroit, or San Francisco, or wherever they go) in a heartbeat if I had money, but alas, the three months of post-graduation unemployment makes that difficult.

Just some points on the preview

Christine Michael was out starting tailback before he went out for the season with a blown ACL against Oklahoma. Cyrus Gray, who was sharing carries with Michael, became the full-time starter and played the rest of the way until he had a stress fracture in his shoulder show up in our game against Kansas. We start Ben Malena, our #3 TB, in the loss to texas.

Jeff Fuller owns virtually WR record we have, but he has been hobbled by a broken bone in his foot all season. If he is healthy for the bowl game, he is a huge mismatch for you.

In five of our six losses we led at halftime. In four of those five games, we led by double-digits. Turnovers and defensive meltdowns in the third quarter have done us in. We were a preseason top 10 team because our offense overflows with talent, but we lacked leadership this season, so the meltdowns kept happening.

If Gray and Fuller are healthy, I don’t see you stopping our offense. The big question for us will be who will call the plays, since Coach Sherman was also the offensive coordinator.

Kick A&M’s ass on December 31st, and go into the New Year with a bang!

You’ll be romping on a future SEC team as well, so keep that in mind! A&M had a tendency this year to start off big, and choke toward the end of the game. Their fans (cadets) will be out in force there in Houston, so try & bring as many purple-clad fans as possible.

We’ll see you next year on October 20th (my birthday, by the way) in Evanston for that rematch!!!

I think you forgot the most important part of the match-up: cheerleader attractiveness. I think everyone can agree that Northwestern definitely wins that competition.

Oh man

I watched the A&M-FSU NCAA matchup at the United Center this year. I was neutral on the game going in, but the Yell Leaders quickly turned me into a ’Noles fan.

Worth noting: the FSU cheer squad is an incredibly attractive bunch.

they compare like you’re cheating by using the dance team, that’s what they compare like. we’re not sending /our/ dance team to the game. i think.

Will be rooting for y'all

After playing you guys last year, there’s no doubt in my mind you should beat A&M…especially since they dont understadn the game of football is played 4 quarters long.

Anyway, Please, beat the hell out of those redneck, women-hating, fake army bastards.

That’s all.

Also, when going out to experience the Houston Night life

Make sure these women-beating yell leaders arent at the same bar you are. They have no respect for anyone who doesnt cheer for A&M. Hide yo’ wife, Hide yo’ Kids.

Also, they have a tendency to mistake shoe polish for human dung. Potty time must be awfully confusing at A&M.

I saw that as "Houston Nutt life" at first glance

That would be much cooler.

You'll have to excuse the west Texas dirt monkeys from Tech

They don’t know what to do with themselves since their team is so pathetic, they were only one of only two Big 12 teams to not become bowl eligible. The other team is Kansas, and they spend all of football season trying to figure out why the strange prolate spheroid won’t bounce right and keep getting stuck in the basketball net.

Now they’re over here trying to talk smack, mainly because they’re bitter they’ve lost to us three years in a row, and with Tommy Tuberville coming back as head coach next year, hope for anything better in West Texas just died. So they have to come in here hopes someone else will do what they can’t accomplish themselves. They’ve defined themselves for so long by their hatred of A&M, now that we’ll never play them again in football, there is no meaning to their lives. Pity them.

I don’t know if y’all have a junior college in the Chicago area where anyone who can’t get into Northwestern or Notre Dame or Illinois goes to, but in Texas, we call that place Texas Tech.

by Beergut on Dec 5, 2011 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

No matter what else they are...

…they were really nice folks to meet at the Ticket City Bowl last year. From the guy who offered me a beer on the train down to those who had a kind word to say about Kain Colter in his first college game appearance, I found the Tech fans to be very gracious, down-to-earth folks. Are we going to experience the same from Aggie fans, Beernut? I don’t get the impression that A&M fans are so much about goodwill to man, but I’m hoping that is a false stereotype. Worst fans we’ve ever played in my opinion – would easily have to be USC at the Rose Bowl. Seemed like a dbag on every corner.

Actually, our reputation for friendliness is pretty well known

I don’t think you’ll run into any problems with Aggie fans, we love college football, and like interacting with other fanbases.

The only fanbase where there is really any open hostility is texas, and that is because they used to be our arch rivals.

Then I'm looking forward to it

Generally, Texans seem like nice people. I’ve enjoyed the bowl trips to San Antonio, El Paso, and Dallas, and am looking forward to spending more than my typical single-day business trip in Houston. If you have any reccomendations for good BBQ, I’m all ears.

Yo Lincoln Park

Yep, you done stirred it good! They crying about “Yankees” over there – we need to remind them the yankees did kick their grand-daddy’s rebel buttocks (if they actually know who their daddys and grand-daddys are).

And anytime some Texy starts getting uppity, all we have to do is remind them that Texass is the home of George W, AND Rick Perry, and one of the biggest whinniest cheatenist crybabys of all time, Roger “Liar-Liar” Clemons.

Just kidding about Texas – I Love all you gun-crazed nuts down there. BTW – When did Perry say he wants to secede again? Is it too much to hope it’s real soon?

Ah, politics on a sports blog.

Always a good decision.

Please

Clemens is a t-sip. That steroided up lying pedophile is not associated with A&M in any way.

You mean he's a Longhorn

I had to look up “t-sip” on urban dictionary

by LincolnParkWildcat on Dec 5, 2011 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

They claim him.

I’m not sure if he actually graduated from there, but he did attend texas after junior college.

by Beergut on Dec 7, 2011 1:46 AM CST up reply actions

Dubya is an idiot

and not a Texan. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, but likes to claim he is a Texan.

Perry is an Aggie, and while I don’t mind him as our governor (I’ve voted for him on the single issue that he is a football fan, and keeps other politicians from screwing with our facility upgrades. Yes, this happens in Texas) because we have the second weakest governor in America, I have no idea why he is running for President. I hope he drops out soon, because he keeps embarrassing himself.

Clemens is trash, and should be in jail.

Foxhole Atheist – No exactly politics… Just beating on the TX Dumb Guys. But you’re right, it’s way too easy, and Just Not Done, as the Brits would say.

Politics Sucks

On a sports blog. HUGE turn-off. Despite the sports quality of LTP, I haven’t touched his website in almost two years because of some of the political idiocy over there. The clocke is ticking here as well

by NU'69 on Dec 8, 2011 9:45 PM CST reply actions

seriously?

when has there ever been politics here outside of this one time?

by pfoley on Dec 8, 2011 10:34 PM CST up reply actions

For that matter

Politics on LTP? I have no memory of anything I’d call overtly political over there.

by TDozer on Dec 9, 2011 8:17 AM CST up reply actions

NU '69

you’re massively overreacting here. i dont think any of the site writers have ever mentioned politics in a front page story or the comments. one commenter brought up rick perry, was told not to talk politics by several people, and apologized.

if one comment you don’t like in a 100 post thread is enough to make you stop reading a site, then i can’t imagine there are any sites you read.
