Surprise, surprise, I have an issue with some of the things Fitz says.
"Once we can showcase the best facilities in the country, the highest APR (Academic Progress Rate) and graduation rate plus winning football, it will be hard to beat," Fitzgerald said. "That's why I'm so thankful. The university is giving us every chance to win a championship."
The "best facilities in the country" line would seem an exaggeration, though Fitzgerald said, "We've researched the best facilities in the country, and we're not going to do something halfway."
So, here's my rant. I love Northwestern, it is a great private university. But outside of Medill and women's lacrosse program, Northwestern does not have a single thing that is "the best in the country." I mean seriously, Fitz, are you telling me that NU's facilities will be better than Michigan, OSU, PSU, Georgia, Florida, and Oregon, etc?
Come on man! Seriously, now you are just flat out exaggerating. I know you are trying to get fans, alumni, recruits, players, etc, pumped up, but does anyone really believe NU will have the top facilities in the country? I doubt no matter how much NU spends on facilities, it will not even be in the top 3 in the Big Ten, let alone the country.
I know you guys think all I do is cherry pick Fitz's quotes, but sometimes I wish he had a little Randy Walker in him, and just let the play do the talking. Why does he have to say such outlandish statements?
Also, can we stop talking about APR? What elite recruit wants to hear how great a school is at academics? Sure, are students picking NU, because it is a great university, of course. But, they don't need a dumb APR stat to say, hey, NU is a good school, have you seen our APR? Come on man, any kid being recruited by NU knows the deal. This is a SPORTS team, not an academic competition.
At least he said something that really pleased me, "The university is giving us every chance to win a championship." So, at least, I FINALLY heard someone say that the goal is winning B1G championships, b/c for the longest time, I thought APR and compliance was the goal of this ath dept.
Again, does facilities impact recruiting, sure! No one is denying that, but I really dislike the implication that better facilities will equal more wins. Umm, no. If facilities equaled wins, Univ of Tenn and UGA would dominate sports, but they don't. Also, should NU fans just wait a few years till facilities are improved? Is that what you are implying that it is facilities which is holding NU back from B1G titles? How about bad coaching, bad defense, and bad players?
I do like a lot about Fitz, but these quotes and implications just bother the hell out of me. I wonder if anyone feels the same. I know there are some Fitz lovers, and that's great, but for you guys, don't these quotes get a little too much? Isn't the marketing a little much, just focus on football and the rest will come.
