Army: By The Numbers
I've been sitting here for ten minutes trying to come up with a coherent lede to this story, and I've got nothing. In fact, calling this a story is probably a bit much; it's just a list of statistical tidbits gleaned from cfbdatawarehouse.com, espn.com, nusports.com and covers.com. This is why I get paid the big bucks. Anyways, numbers and stuff.
13 - Consecutive losing seasons for Army football before going 7-6 last year.
5 - Number of bowl games Army has been to in their history.
3 - Number of bowl games Army has won. They beat SMU in the Armed Forces Bowl last year, Illinois in the 1985 Peach Bowl, and Michigan State in the 1984 Cherry Bowl.
2 - You guessed it! Number of bowl games Army has lost. They lost a heart breaker to Auburn (been there, Army bros) in the 1996 Independence Bowl, and to Alabama in the 1988 Sun Bowl.
9 - Consecutive losses for Army against rival Navy.
24-27-3 - Army's all-time record against schools currently in the Big Ten.
50-0-2 - Army's all-time record against schools currently in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Pick on someone your own size, Army.
0 - Number of times Northwestern has won in West Point. The Wildcats lost their only trip to Army, 23-7 in 1988. This is also Army's last win over a Big Ten team. Northwestern won the previous three meetings, in 1951, 1953 and 1986.
8-5 - Northwestern's all-time record against the three service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force)
4 - Interceptions thrown by Brett Basanez the last time Northwestern played a service academy. NU blew a 14 point fourth quarter lead and lost 22-21 at home to Air Force in 2003.
678 - Total yards allowed by Northwestern the last time they played a road game against a service academy. Somehow, NU still won that game, defeating Navy 49-40 back in 2002.
8 - Fumbles by Army last week in their 23-20 loss to San Diego State
353 - Rushing yards per game for Army this season, ranking second in the nation
74.5 - Passing yards per game for Army this season, ranking 118th in the nation
409 - Total yards of offense for Army in their Week 1 loss to Northern Illinois.
198 - Total yards of offense for Army in the fourth quarter of their Week 1 loss to Northern Illinois, after Army had fallen behind 49-3. Unsurprisingly, Army players don't quit.
9.5 - Points Northwestern is favored by on Saturday.
11/19/05 - The last time Northwestern was favored by at least 9.5 points in a road game. NU was favored by 16 against Illinois that day, and covered the spread, winning 38-21.

Good numbers
Now…
Can you clarify what exactly is happening with Wildcat Report? Are you leaving SOP behind or just writing there on the side? Follow up question: if you are leaving, should we let that tarnish all the good times we’ve had?
(The above comment was meant for Rodger)
Thanks for the post, Loretta8.

Charles P. Piece joined Grantland yesterday
9 months after this:

So I don’t know what to think anymore.
Glad to hear you’re staying, though. Just make sure to save your best stuff for here. Any future praise for Katy Perry can be moved over to WR without any complaints from me.
for the record
I worked six hours a night four nights a week at the Daily last quarter. This year I will work maybe two hours a week for WR. The only effect it will have on the site is I will have increased access to the NU football team and know a lot more about recruiting. So that’s that.

Totally cool
Really meant this mostly jokingly – I figured you’d be sticking around here. Keep up the good work, and congrats on joining up with WR.
Congrats on WR
You actually getting paid now? No more amateur status? For the record, I have yet to hear a Katy Perry song that I have not at least liked a little, and some I like a lot.
