Sippin' on Podcast Purple Podcast Podcast Podcats, Episode #004: Jews and Top Gun with Jon Rosenberg

America: how does it work?

Loretta and I are joined - well, technically, only I am joined, but, you'll figure that out eventually - by Jon Rosenberg, one of the proprietors of the new and quite good Central Street Beat. Rosenberg runs the Seven Minutes in Heaven podcast, which has featured noted sports enthusiasts Mo Greene and Juice Thompson, meanwhile, all I've done is have him on, so, he's winning this battle by virtue of being a less interesting guest than the guests he has on his podcast. I have reread that last sentence eight times and am not sure if it's an insult or a compliment, but regardless, Army. We discuss our bubbies' latke recipes and which nice Jewish girls we plan on marrying.

"Top Gun Anthem", Howard Faltenmeyer: In addition to being the most American song of all time, and therefore the best, Top Gun Anthem puts Northwestern in a good mindset before the Army game. We obviously have the utmost respect for Army, its players, and the men who serve. But this is football, and we must focus on winning. Therefore, it's time for us to remember that if United States Naval Aviator Lt. Pete Mitchell  had a rooting interest, he would back not the Black Knights, but the Navy Midshipmen. As would Goose. In this shirtless volleyball showdown, we must remember that there's no prize for second place.

FNL Hater

I guess this will prove that someone listened to the entire podcast, so there’s that. Mark it up on the big board.

Somewhere in there, Jon Rosenberg made some unfavorable comments about Friday Night Lights. Way off base. Granted, it’s only loosely about football, but it’s a generally accepted fact that it’s great television. Based on some insider knowledge he seems to have about the show, I suspect Jon secretly has a devastating man-crush on Tim Riggins. Who wouldn’t?

I think they also talked about NU football at some point.

first off welcome

and woah, I have a listener. thanks.
second off, I have qualms with FNL, mainly the fact that I think most people who watch it are duped into watching it because it’s about football. If you accept that it pretty much has nothing to do with football, it’s a pretty decent show.

Loved the first season

Lost me in the second season with that silly murder plotline.

Second Season was great

Not only the murder plotline, but two teenage characters banging older women! And Lyla getting deep into Christianity and getting engaged to some dude! And Buddy adopting a troubled kid! And the stupid plot where Coach coaches at a college for a few shows when you know that he is going to come back to coach Dillon! And Saracen cries in a shower! And a lot of other crazy stuff!

On second thought, maybe the second season did suck. The best part about the second season is that when they came back for a third season they acted like nothing in the second season ever happened. The third season was actually pretty great, as far as FNL goes. The show always had some stupid plots and a lot of it was laughable, but parts of it seemed more like real life than almost all of what is on TV these days (or any days for that matter).

First post

It’s good that my first post was not really at all football related.

I almost used up my first post last week to comment on the kid wearing salmon-colored shorts in the picture for the attendance poll. Salmon.

Obligatory Comments

Army v SDSU: I watched some of this game as well, and note that Army put the ball on the ground a couple more times right at the whistle that were reviewed and the runner was ruled down, but the fact is that their ball security has been very bad. I believe at least some of that was definitely due to Steelman’s shoulder injury: one of the fumbles recovered by Army came after he exited and reentered the game following the initial injury; he would come out of the game for good after that last fumble. Look for NU to hit him hard (but legally) to try and test him early.

NU MBB:Army:
I believe this analogy is a very good one, given that they both play unique schemes on both offense (triple option/Princeton) and defense (double eagle flex/1:3:1). Unfortunately, right now they’re running at about the same level of success.

Armed Forces Bowl: Note that this is the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, not that that would suddenly make it better than the TicketCity Bowl. In any case they seem to be signing one year deals with the service academies on a rotating basis to lock them in if they are bowl eligible that season (if they are not, it becomes an at-large spot). Army just signed a deal with said bowl for 2016 (they’re already inked for 2013 as well). The Poinsettia Bowl (in San Diego) and EagleBank Bowl (in DC) also enjoy signing up the academies, amongst a few other lower profile bowls.

BC’s Downfall: Not that this is the only reason behind BC’s offensive ineptitude against UCF, but Ifeanyi Momah (the giant WR who went well over 100 yards against NU) went out at the very end of the NU game with a season ending ACL tear. I’d imagine he would cause some troubles with other teams if he were around. (Side note: NU has a knack of facing teams who later lose their star WRs: think Syracuse’s Williams who left the team just after they beat NU in 2009).

Northwestern’s recent bad losses:
Despite the fact that the ‘Cats have seemingly lost to a “bad” team every season, NU hasn’t lost to a non-BCS conference team since traveling to Nevada in 2006. The only Big Ten teams who have gone longer without losing to a non-BCS team: Ohio State, Penn State, and Nebraska.
