Michigan State Spartans vs. Northwestern Wildcats Game Thread

Michigan St. Spartans at Northwestern Wildcats, Jan 14, 2012 2:00 PM CST

Welp, Michigan State. This could be all of the bads, but, hey! Northwestern has a chance to beat another ranked team! WHO'S EXCITED FOR THE EVENTUAL HEARTBREAKING TWO POINT LOSS!!!!1!111!!!! GO CATS YEAH NORTHWESTERN aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand i wish i were dead. I'd provide more analysis but I actually just dropped my Intro to Existentialism class mainly because I was the only person who laughed when the professor talked about Jean Wahl, get it, he's the point guard for the Wizards ahahahahahaha.

(Northwestern basketball has driven me insane.)

Second off, SoP readers and creepers everywhere will be pleased to know that I went to McGee's last night with the infamous "girl who I once didn't go to McGee's with in order to go to the Mississippi Valley State basketball game". I expect a fanpost asking me about it.

Feel free to comment, but you'd probably be better served with your time by crying in a room by yourself for a few hours.

Oh, no

Just heard that rather than The Good Drew or The Bad Drew, today we are getting The Flu Drew. He sat out last couple practices.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 1:35 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

And Cobb is unlikely

This could get very ugly.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 1:36 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Meanwhile

Looks like Iowa will beat Michigan.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 1:44 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

on a similar note

how do we match up against iowa? looking at their roster they don’t seem to be all that big, maybe the lukaless lineup would work well against them?

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

The depressing thing

Is that we were figuring on them being below us in the standings, with Minny, the Huskers and the Sanduskies. Looks like maybe not.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 1:52 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Maybe that will help

I’m in an airplane again. And no Eanet — the musings of WNUR.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:07 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Serious question:

If we payed $100 to the players for each defensive rebound, would we win more games?

Also, Crawford has the flu?

by Glopknar on Jan 14, 2012 2:08 PM CST reply actions

Sparty crowd

On radio, sounds like a game in East Lansing

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:13 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Drew had an IV

Which explains early exit

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:15 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

So many health problems

And they underscore our lack of depth.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:17 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Davide already has as many boards

As Luka had in the last game. And more points and assists.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:28 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

So of course

Carmody takes Davide out and puts in Luka.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:30 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

yeah

4-5 from 3, 5-5 from 2

doubt they’ll shoot 90% all game

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

Is Luka the worst player in the B1G?

Or is it just my imagination.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:34 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

he has flashes of decency

just seems to have major confidence issues, which aren’t being helped by having marcotulio/curletti start in his place

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Johnny still hates the rims

But Draymond loves them.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:35 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

NU seems confident out there today

got a good feeling about this game, idk why

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 2:38 PM CST reply actions

amazing we are in this

They are shooting 77 percent to our 40.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:42 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

yeah if you told me they'd be shooting 77% at this point in the game

with everyone other than curletti having a total of 15 points

i’d think we’d be down by 20

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

Davide

He is from Michigan. Psyched!

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:48 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Wish I could hear Gus call this one

The NUR kid just compared Gus to Tebow.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:50 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

SHURNAAAAAAAAAAAA

FROM 5000 FEET

SHOULDA BEEN AND ONE TOO

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 2:52 PM CST reply actions

Davide should always wear a black jersey

It’s his color I guess. He’s playing the game half of his life.

by wcgrad on Jan 14, 2012 2:56 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Wow.

Listening to this game on XM Radio, and I’m just blown away.

This would be a FANTASTIC win against a top 10 team. Let’s finish strong Cats. This could be a season changer.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 14, 2012 2:56 PM CST reply actions

I feel vindicated

For my incessant Luka-bashing.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 2:57 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Love that we've got Gus

Swap out Jackson for Morris and it’s top-tier announcing.

by Glopknar on Jan 14, 2012 3:02 PM CST reply actions

Davide

13 point half. ORebs, beating em up

by Glopknar on Jan 14, 2012 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

That’s … like … wow. Awesome. Has it been Luka-free?

by RotoJeff on Jan 14, 2012 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

he played a minute or two

got a rebound, proceeded to not go up strong and got it stripped

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Out of town and about today

hopefully going to be able to run to a bar for the end and eventual heartbreak.

GameChannel in the meantime! Go ’Cats!

by MNWildcat on Jan 14, 2012 3:15 PM CST reply actions

we're almost in the bonus already

hopefully we can keep making ft’s if it comes down to that

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 3:16 PM CST reply actions

Shurnaballs so cold today

Keep firing, Johnny!

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 3:17 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

huge 3

We were starting to stagnate there.

by RotoJeff on Jan 14, 2012 3:18 PM CST reply actions

the refs have decided that there will be lots of ft's this half

I assume that means green will end up like 15 for 17 or something.

by Nirvana91 on Jan 14, 2012 3:20 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Long time no see, everyone!

I hear we’re actually starting the 2nd half on a good note. Now for the real question — how much wood could a ohforgetaboutit

by Sasser on Jan 14, 2012 3:20 PM CST reply actions

8 offensive rebounds and a kickout for 3

wish that didn’t happen to us so often

BUT CRAWFORD RESPONDS

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 3:21 PM CST reply actions

oh come on

ticky tack fouls everywhere

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 3:23 PM CST reply actions

It's just like I said guys

Davide Curletti is totally the key to this game.

/Maybe I didn’t really say that before the game.

by RotoJeff on Jan 14, 2012 3:28 PM CST reply actions

Landed

Was afraid to turn on the iPhone. Up 10!

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 3:37 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

fouls

fouls everywhere

not a lot of flow to this game

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 3:38 PM CST reply actions

ft's will decide this

Both teams shooting 2 from here on out (10 min left!!)

by Nirvana91 on Jan 14, 2012 3:38 PM CST via mobile reply actions

MSU really sloppy here. Their heads just not in this game. Cats gotta finish.

by buckyor on Jan 14, 2012 3:41 PM CST reply actions

Serious love for Reggie Hearn

How did he not get more chances before this year?

by RotoJeff on Jan 14, 2012 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Today

NU has dunked on MSU, more than MSU has dunked on NU

by Glopknar on Jan 14, 2012 3:43 PM CST reply actions

come on NU

Let’s see the composure down the stretch from the charleston classic.

by wcgrad on Jan 14, 2012 3:44 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Wait... GameCast...

did I see Omar Jimenez’s name?

by MNWildcat on Jan 14, 2012 3:44 PM CST reply actions

MSU looks like it wants to tap out.

Where is Ric Flair to give them the Figure 4 and finish them.

Thornton fouled out

And the lead hasn’t changed. Deep breath.

“This is Chicago’s Big Ten team folks!”

Gus was a huge fan of the marketing push

Glad to hear him give us a little love. Sounded like he was almost rooting for NU

by wcgrad on Jan 14, 2012 4:17 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that

he really sounded like he was a NU fan. he had some great calls i wish i could have recorded

by GoCats815 on Jan 14, 2012 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

Pull Curletti now?

And go with foul- shooters?

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 4:08 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

I thought it was some excellent trolling, personally.

Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."

2.5 second left. Anything can happen.

Great TO there Isso

Got a 7-point play you’re gonna draw up?

by buckyor on Jan 14, 2012 4:09 PM CST reply actions

Called it.

We were clearly due.

by Chadnudj on Jan 14, 2012 4:10 PM CST via Android app reply actions

me too!

was a little bit off with the 12-pt win and shurna having 41, but whatever

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

finally, call some more for us chad!

NU did a great job! Game ball to curletti, honorable mention to Crawford, channeling some MJ by battling the flu.

by wcgrad on Jan 14, 2012 4:14 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

damn, if we finish against illinois and michigan

we’re 14-3 right now, that could be top-20 in next week’s poll

whatever, can’t complain about a win this big, nice to FINALLY close out a game strong

by derpityderp on Jan 14, 2012 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

Carmody sez

The boys played with “a lot of verve out there”.

How many D-I coaches describe their team like that?

by MNWildcat on Jan 14, 2012 4:14 PM CST reply actions

What credit does Carmody deserve for this one?

From an X’s and O’s standpoint, what did NU do well today?

by Hibore222 on Jan 14, 2012 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Much

From what I could tell from radio, he pulled all the right strings today. And I an from the FBC camp.

by SeattleCat on Jan 14, 2012 4:33 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Whatever tweaking he's done on the defensive side of the ball

Has taken their defensive play to another stratosphere.

I don’t think I’ve seen an NU team play this effective of defense over a four game period since I’ve been watching them (admittedly, that’s only a few years) but yeah you gotta give Carmody some credit for that.

by wcgrad on Jan 14, 2012 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yes x 100.

The adjustments I’ve seen on defense in the past three games have been remarkable.

I ABSOLUTELY credit Carmody for that.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 14, 2012 5:04 PM CST up reply actions

I was totally thinking the better performances were a statistical anomaly

But then we come out and take it to a great team, and even though they shot really well to start, they turned the ball over and never got in sync. I thought that we would get murdered on the glass, and though MSU got its share of offensive boards at stretches, NU got some key putbacks (see Hearn dunking Shurna’s miss, and Curletti stealing the ball from under the hoop). Also, it seemed we managed to get some over-the-back calls, so while that’s not a rebound per se, it benefits NU because it helped us get into the (double) bonus and we could get points on a lot of possessions where we didn’t do much other than drive to the hoop.
