Northwestern Wildcats vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Game Thread
Northwestern Wildcats at Minnesota Golden Gophers, Jan 22, 2012 3:00 PM CST
I need help convincing the like nine people in this room that this AFC Championship Game isn't that important and that Northwestern vs. MInnesota is, you know, more important, which probably isn't true but for the sake of me running a website about Northwestern sports totally is.
On the real, though, this is kind of a big deal for Northwestern. Northwestern hasn't managed to do too well on the road this year and could really use a victory against a modestly equal opponent. The Michigan State thing was great, but Northwestern needs to do it over and over and over. This vicious stretch of opponents is only useful if NU gets some wins out of it, so, yeah.
Go Ravens! Loretta8 is spending the day watching the Pats because he's a sniveling soulless excuse for a co-writer, and I hope only the worst for him, but if you're watching Northwestern instead, here's where to be.

A bit off topic: Wisky @ Illy
As I’m watching the last 3 minutes, is it me, or does the Illini offense lack any sense of urgency? It seems like they’re awful casual in setting their screens. I didn’t watch the whole game, but it seems like when Wisky has the ball, they cut hard and screen with intention.
On the other hand, it may just be my natural bias on Illinois basketball: talented individuals that haven’t jelled yet.

keep fouling Illinois!

Back from a week in Puerto Vallarta
C’mon Cats. Could sure use a welcome back win today.
By the way, BTN2Go is a pretty sweet app. Even though my only use of it was watching Big Red rain threes on us. Nevertheless, still pretty cool app. Other weird fact — they sure love their ACC basketball down there. That got alot of run on their version of ESPN2.

Argh.
no rolls after attacking the rim, and they’re making shots.
www.massivecreativity.com
Perhaps the only good thing about the first 4 minutes
that we drew 2 fouls, and that we’re only down 7.
I’m not worried yet, cause we’re getting good looks. We need to keep defensive intensity up though. looks like the refs are (say it with me) “lettin ’em play”

I'm not worried
Seems odd — but I know we can put up points. So many tough rolls already.
I am concerned that we don’t have much left on the bench. We only got Froo and Luka, right?

If we end the half down 15
I would take that gladly.
www.massivecreativity.com
i always say
if the other team can outscore you by 17 in one half, you can outscore them by 17 in the other half.
but things have to change fast.
it looks like feast-or-famine
with the kraken. I’m convinced that they’re going to be more uncomfortable, but they’ll occasionally get that nice skipper for a slam dunk. They gotta still use it, as the man-to-man is not working at all.
In terms of offense — i don’t know. I’m not convinced we’re going to get 10 fouls called against Minny in the second half. Even so, I wouldn’t expect us to make free throws as we’re ice cold today.
I like Shurna getting more frisky, though. I hope Carm is giving one of those patented hairdryer treatments at the half.
www.massivecreativity.com
we gave up 41 to Minny
I didn’t know our guys would be so affected by JoePa’s death.

tho
might switch to like everclear if this game keeps up
by Rodger Sherman on Jan 22, 2012 4:05 PM CST up reply actions
Let's take a look at the last two halves this team has played....
-Outscored 84-49
-Shot 16-58 (27.5%) from the floor
-Shot 5-23 (21.7%) from 3
-Shot 12-21 (57%) from the free throw line
-Outrebounded 42-28
-14 turnovers
This game began a crucial three-game stretch against beatable teams. This is an embarrassment. Everyone associated with this program—from coaches, to players, to support staff, to administrators—needs to be called out.
Get it under 10 with 10 to go...
and you’ll have a stew goin’ on.
www.massivecreativity.com
yep.
Appreciate that he’s trying to attack and draw fouls…but…gyeuhh
www.massivecreativity.com
not so sure...
www.massivecreativity.com
I wonder if Sobo is wearing down
Since the game when he scored 20, he’s been horrible.
by SeattleCat on Jan 22, 2012 4:23 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions
how can we miss that rebound?
That’s focus and effort.
by SeattleCat on Jan 22, 2012 4:29 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions
We continue to attack the trees
I think we’ve picked up 4 fouls in the 16-12 min segment and its not even half over yet.
www.massivecreativity.com
6 fouls in this segment
Wow.
www.massivecreativity.com
so we get them in foul trouble
And don’t drive. We are supposed to be the smartest team in the conference?
by SeattleCat on Jan 22, 2012 4:33 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions
Yeah...but he looked to drive
after he hesitated. To me, he was looking to drive. I was surprised he didn’t launch.
www.massivecreativity.com
I hate that this is basically an even game
if you take away those first 8 minutes of non-scoring derp.
Not to make excuses at all. Just, any better start and we’d be down like 5 right now instead.

3 ... 2 ... 1...
May the who-is-our-next-coach discussion begin …
That was a great, fun moment
But I’m afraid the last two games are far more telling of the direction of this team. We came out incredibly flat. For that first ugly stretch, we played man against a team with clearly superior athleticism and inside game, and weak outside shooting. As the announcers pointed out, our players bent at the waist for loose balls instead of diving on the floor. Other than Shurna and Marco, the whole team looked defeated 10 minutes in.
My rose-colored glasses got shattered today.
on the other hand
what of the two games against ranked teams decided by three points?
by Rodger Sherman on Jan 22, 2012 5:09 PM CST up reply actions
Ugh.
Shurna did everything he could do out there. But we had “Bad Drew” today. Marco gave us some scoring off the bench. Sobo and Hearn had bad days defensively today.
We had a ton of bad rolls. We tipped a bunch of balls in the second half, and they recovered. We’ve played better games.
The truth is — we can still win any game on our sked. But you’re gonna need good drew and shurna to even have a chance.
