Greenstein NAILS it about Shurna

Amazing that John Shurna could walk away as the statisical greatest player at NU, but never be THE guy on any of the teams. Senior year - Crawford; junior year - Juice; sophomore - Juice; freshman - Coble. I hope Shurna picks it up, but everytime I watch him, I never see the guy I want to. He is a good player, but not great, and I'm sad for that.

Same thing's said about Perry Jones III
But yeah, I’d say that I agree. there are too many times in a game where I want to see Shurna demand the ball. But instead of that I see little a lot of dribble handoffs on the perimeter without solid cuts around the hoop. Kinda discouraging, really.
Shurna is at his best once he gets confident, decides he needs the ball, and finds a way to create separation by running off screens. I thought he did a good job of this in the Charleston Classic for example, but he didn’t do such a good job of it in the second half at Creighton. There were a lot of possessions where he didn’t seem to be in the flow of the O, especially when Drew Crawford left because of his 4th foul.
What’s missing from Shurna is that confidence that with the game on the line, the ball will find its way into his hands and he’ll find a way to score. Would love to see that just so I can shout “SHURNA FOR THE WIN”.
A few cheapies
1) I think people are crazy when they say this is Crawford’s team. He’s more consistent than he’s been, but you still don’t know whether the double-digit player is going to show up or the single-digit guy. He’s definately more aggressive than Shurna, but how often does that result in missed dunks and running jumpers. I’ll take Shurna’s decision-making any day of the week. I almost let me emphasize ALMOST want to go as far to say that Shurna should be handling the ball even more. I like his ball-handling as a point-forward type. Get in the half court and let him run the show. How much more can a skinny kid playing the four be expected to do?
Both players leave just a tad to be desired, but I’ll take the lesser of two evils.
2) It drove me ABSOLUTELY BATS earlier in the year when Carmody said about a Shurna shooting slump, “He’s a senior. He should be able to figure it out for himself.” If there’s a guy who screams for a little attention on the mental side of the game, it’s Shurna. But he’s got it all figured out, right? Except that the whole world sees these gaps in his mental game.
3) Can somebody please keep Tim Doyle away from the Cats best players? What does he know about creating a winning atmosphere or playing at a high level?
couldnt agree more with point #3
remember when tim doyle ripped the northwestern students and fans for poor attendance? as the team was in the midst of winning 2 big ten games the whole year.
fucking Tim Doyle. having to listen to him on television has moved him down to my least favorite NU player ever, congrats Vince Scott you’re not in the top spot any more.
