Purdue 58, Northwestern 56: Postgame Thread

I'm drunk and depressed and really dont have much to say, other than it's going to take a near miracle for Northwestern to make the tournament.

And that when you're down to a six man rotation due to injuries and an inability to reach the maximum number of scholarship players, you need all six guys to play well. And Davide Curletti had probably the worst game of his career, yet Bill Carmody still went to him on defense in favor of Drew Crawford on the last few possessions. Why, I have no idea.

Benched forever or hurt? How the hell did we end up playing only six guys. Even playing Freundt here-and-there would have been quasi-useful.

The 4-5 minute stretch late in the second half

when we went back to a lineup with Davide… Why?

by MNWildcat on Jan 28, 2012 7:10 PM CST reply actions

At least I was able to enjoy the game for a few minutes...

…when I was on the court as the purple “monster trike” towards the end of the first half. Key to winning that is to weigh 100 pounds and not 190, apparently.

my friend had money on you. you probably should lay low for a few days.

Nah

Far left…which isn’t much better, but, hey! 2nd place. I’ll let my buddy know that your buddy is looking for him though.

My bad

I tried. I got hung up on the banner. I think I was going for second place anyway. We got torched.

You guys were fun to watch

That girl was just unstoppable though.

But nothing can top the dribble/layup musical chairs from a few years ago when one kid crosschecked another out of the final seat. They shook hands afterwards.

Oh, don't forget the grocery cart contest

A lucky 8 year old got to shoot nerfy balls into a cart. One shot hit a cheerleader and bounced in. The 8 year old also figured she could bounce the ball and it’d go farther than if she heaved it. I was kind of disappointed she didn’t underhand it.

The game itself — painful but hard fought and never dirty. So there’s that.

Is it still too early to evaluate Carmody?

At almost the halfway point of the Big Ten season, NU is 11th in the Big Ten. Even by my 7-11 prediction, this NU team is underachieving.

Just bad, and I’m sure the normal set of NU excuses will roll out here. Let’s not forget the classic excuse of ‘look at all the close home losses’ will produce a big home win…against Nebraska.

Now, NU is working for the NIT and the crown of who wins more Big Ten games, the men or the women.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 28, 2012 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Please stop.

Please. There is no benefit to evaluating a guy/firing him before the season is finished. NONE.

by Chadnudj on Jan 29, 2012 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed wholeheartedly

This does suck. Losing games sucks.

Losing close games sucks worse. The Red Sox fans (pre-winning the World Series) used to say they had it harder than Cubs fans because they got close before having their hopes dashed, whereas the Cubs were just bad and never/rarely got close.

When we’re close to winning these games….it hurts more to come up on the short-end. Is firing Carmody the answer? Maybe. I just want to let the season play out, and then evaluate everything.

(One other thing to keep in mind — while we’re not winning enough to make the Tourney, we haven’t lost to a team yet that is out of the NCAA tournament. We obviously need to beat Tourney-bound teams to make the Tourney, but so far, I’m at least a bit pleased we haven’t had a loss against a team that truly sucks.)

by Chadnudj on Jan 29, 2012 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

I'm confident saying one thing

if NU doesn’t make the tourney (which looks highly likely), Carmody should go. But the fan and senior in me refuses to believe the season is over until the final buzzer sounds. Anybody who wants to call me stupid for feeling that way can call me stupid, but I don’t really give the slightest inkling of a rat’s ass what they think, so, there.

by Rodger Sherman on Jan 29, 2012 11:38 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

The simple question was..

…is it too early to evaluate Carmody? Sounds like to Chad & Rodger, it is.

That’s fine.

We all know what will happen, even the most ardent Carmody fans are at a loss for words/explanation/excuses. I’ll refrain, b/c I’m truly arguing/debating 1% of the NU fan population.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 29, 2012 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

But Chad...

Don’t you understand that firing Carmody right now would show our Commitment to WINNING? Imagine how many recruits between then and now would realize that now that Carmody is gone, that it’s now OKAY to come to NU! Especially those big men, they’ll be lining up after this team loses the remainder of its games against the B1G without a head coach.

We might even get the top pick in the Draft, (if David Stern doesn’t give it to the Knicks to appease Rodger)! We should also hire a general manager and more scouts! Yeah, lots of scouts to go overseas to Turkey and Germany to find the next Dirk Nowitsky or Enes Kanter, or to foreign cities like New York or DC or even (GASP) Chicago. Because everyone knows that those kids from the Chicago public league are just dying to go to NU. Why haven’t we tried recruiting them?

Clearly, for every game we leave Carmody at the helm, God reduces NU’s fan base by half. If we wait for the end of the season the only fan left with be MacArthur! Then instead of having a winning B1G season in two years when our top pick in the draft develops, we’ll be doomed to mediocrity and irrelevance until the Second Coming (of Michael Jordan, that is).

For it is written (in the book of basketball),

In the sixth year after BC, The virgin will give birth to a son and He shall be clothed in Royal Purple with a pure white ‘N’ emblazoned on his chest. A basketball resides in his right hand a whistle in his left. Out of the hoops wasteland, he shall emerge dealing dimes to the poor and lowly. Your young men shall drain threes and your old men shall slam dunk! These will the the signs of the Second Coming!

Mr. Phillips please, don’t forestall basketball salvation! Repent from your support of the evil Bill Carmody, before we are sent into exile!

(with apologies to God, Chad, MacArthur, Coach Carmody, Jim Phillips and the authors of Isaiah and the Gospel of Matthew)

by Rodger Sherman on Jan 28, 2012 7:52 PM CST reply actions

This quote is exactly what is depressing abt our fandom...

Does that comment mean that you wish we had scored 6 more points and won those games because the tourney would look good? Or that you think that if we won those games our program would be in any better position than they are in today?

If our vaunted 6 man rotation that includes a walk on and davide curletti – referred to by dakich as a role player at best – had won those games, do you feel like that validates the direction of the program?

This isn’t about underachieving. There are 6 freaking guys on the court. It’s a fucking joke that they can’t give away free northwestern educations. If they rip off 10 in a row and go to the sweet 16 because these 6 guys become bionic it doesn’t make this team or this program any closer to becoming even mediocre. They literally are incapable of recruiting a guy that can drop step. Luka shd have played with his boot. What the hell is the difference?

Nothing epitomized carmody’s hubris more than when he fired coble from what what would have been a legit top 20 team. He’s too smart to need an all big ten guy out there. He thinks he’s too smart to have to recruit. Too smart to use scholarships, etc. The guy was born to coach in the ivy league, though given what is going on in the ivy these days he would probably get buried there too.

Kevin stallings (who I wanted when they went KO), Chris Collins, Scott drew. Any of them when Brad Stevens says no. Or anyone else. The status quo is just a joke.

I wasn't going off on rodger...

…but I will go off on someone that has watched this for 12 years and needed a Saturday game against purdue to decide enough is enough.

Its just shocking they lost that game. With a week to prepare, you would think they could have simulated purdue’s pressure in practice. I mean with luka, marcotulio, 2 walk ons and a guy from lab school, those practices must get hot. Maybe some of the women’s team scrimmage guys come by in case anyone needs a breather.

It’s just a shame for the kids on the team that the program doesn’t take themselves seriously enough to field a full squad.

No offense, but doesn't this only happen when we lose?

I’ve NEVER seen a fan do this after NU beats them. I’m sure your opinions are honest and true, but I’d rather win the game and not get the ’we’ll be pulling for you to go undefeated’.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 28, 2012 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

No offense taken.

I was a student at Purdue from 1984 to 1989 when NU was the perpetual doormat of the B1G. The progress your athletic programs have made is both remarkable and well-deserved. There are schools in the B1G that I truly despise; IU, first and foremost, and OSU, and Michigan come to mind but NU has never been one of them.

We’ve had our share of hardship as well and I will be the first to congratulate you if we lose the match-up next month. I was offering a compliment on a game well-played, please take it in the spirit in which it was offered. I have always held fond feelings for your school.

by GeorgiaBoiler on Jan 28, 2012 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Understood.

GBoiler, it is nothing personal to you or any other fan of NU, but in my life of NU fandom 1998 to now, I’ve heard plenty of opposing fans say, “Great game guys, you are awesome, I love Chicago, go Cats, you guys are SOO smart, so classy, blah, blah, blah” The common thread of those compliments is they ALWAYS came after they won and NU lost.

I’d rather be a winner and not liked than a loser and Mr. Popular.

However, I do agree that we all have schools we like/dislike in the Big Ten and appreciate your love for NU. I hope it shows if/when NU wins.

by NU Alumni - Class of 2002 on Jan 28, 2012 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

I understand the chip on your shoulder but it is no longer necessary.

I offered your school a compliment and you threw it back at me not once, but twice. I would expect that sort of thing from the lowlifes at Indiana but not from Northwestern. As Boilers we try to be gracious winners as well as good losers, Lord knows, we’ve lost plenty of games. I trust you do not represent the majority of Wildcats and I will always wish your school the best but you act like a jerk. I complimented your team on a game well played, it was not my intention to gloat but apparently you took it that way. I am sorry you apparently misunderstood me. I wish NU the best and hope you make it into the tournament but not at our expense.

When NU beats Purdue in football or basketball, I’d love to see you make the same comment.

Yes, I don’t speak for any other NU fans, I only speak for myself, but I can hope that most NU fans want to win games instead of being known as a classy losing team.

Classy. But while you weren’t looking, we went back to being the doormats of the league. Check the standings.

by SeattleCat on Jan 29, 2012 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

Don't give up yet.

A team that handled Mich State the way yours did and almost won the Michigan game at Ann Arbor in OT is no doormat. This is one of those years in the B1G when it seems anyone can beat anyone on any given night. Penn State blew us out, Nebraska beat Indiana, we blew out Illinois, you thumped Mich State, etc. Interesting season. Good luck to you all.

i dunno

its tough to win on the road on the big ten. purdue didnt shoot well and still found a way to grind out a win.

i dont see purdue doing much in march, but they should be good enough to at least make it.

Dakich

I’m a bit bored with the discussion, so I thought I’d bring it down a notch to discuss the color commentator, Dan Dakich. I saw Loretta is a fan, and I couldn’t aqree more. He’s good on BTN and I really like what he brings to sports talkradio when he’s on the air in the Chicago. Also, took a class he taught at IU, and he was fabulous.

Anyhow, did he have any good insight on NU during the game? Would love to hear his thoughts.

As an aside, I was pretty bored during the first half yesterday and I was interested that he almost never looks at the monitor while broadcasting. I kept trying to catch him, but he’s all about watching the floor. Kind of interesting and a bit different from many commentators.

by Sec.112 on Jan 29, 2012 7:20 PM CST reply actions

i cant remember much in the way of specifics

but he had a lot of good points. it was a bit purdue-centric though, i think hes more familiar with their roster.

by Loretta8 on Jan 29, 2012 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

that's my thought too

He kept saying “If Purdue loses this game they’ll have lost 3 straight and be 14-8. That’s NIT territory.”

To be fair, we haven’t done enough recently to merit extensive commentary.

While on the subject of commentators.

Being from Kansas City originally, I often listen to Mitch Holthus for NFL football (Chiefs play by play). Enjoying his commentary during the Evansville/Indiana St. tilt right now.

Anyone for a list of commentators who should call tourney games?

by wcgrad on Jan 29, 2012 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

I'm a fan

Think he does his homework, and isn’t afraid to break the narrative to call what he’s actually seeing on the floor. That seems like a low bar to clear, but I’m surprise at how many fail to do that.

I’ll acknowledge I’m predisposed to liking him – I lived in Indiana until I was 15 and grew up an IU fan.

by RotoJeff on Jan 30, 2012 2:55 AM CST up reply actions

Over a decade of failure

Our coach’s decision making in the last 30 seconds of the Purdue game was terrible. Was Carmody the only guy in the building who did not know the ball was going to Hummel? Why didn’t our offensive genius coach secure a reasonably good look and shot in the last 8 seconds?

by wbhnu on Jan 30, 2012 10:47 AM CST reply actions

I would be happy to debate the topics....

….but you would probably just grab all your toys and stomp out of the room.

Your head coach is 58-127. He sucks. He sucked when he quit on his team after the 1 and 2 win seasons, and he sucks again not being able to give away scholarships. He sucks because he has never had a big guy who can dunk. He sucks because he is a noted x and o guy who routinely makes big ass mistakes at big moments – the few big moments his teams have ever had. The fact that it took losing to a bad purdue team with a week to prepare to get you to consider that maybe just maybe this program is in trouble speaks to your acumen on the topic.

And yeah, shurna, coble, crawford + a sr pt guard, in a rancid big ten….that’s a ranked team. Big, unguardable based on the league last year. That was his shot, and he couldn’t get over himself. Now we have a 6 man team. It’s awesome.

by dbr0675own1 on Jan 30, 2012 8:03 PM CST reply actions

see, for some reason

you actually think i care about what you have to say.

I do not. In fact, i blocked you on twitter im pretty sure at some point during LAST SEASON because i was tired of you clogging up my mentions with sub-moronic opinions about things I didn’t even say. your non-stop tweets at me featured more straw men than a halloween hayride.

Yet somehow, despite thinking that i dont have “acumen on the topic”, you care so much about my opinions that you read my articles on this site and still comment on my tweets that I’ve blocked you from reading. It’s kind of frightening.

by Loretta8 on Jan 30, 2012 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I hadn’t been to your site in a long while it would seem. i read what other people say, and happen upon your stuff. Given there aren’t 100 people that care about northwestern basketball in the world, yeah I go places where some people have odd opinions. Hey wait that’s weird, why does no one care about this program? Oh yeah, it’s because it’s terrible, stagnant, doesn’t change coaches even when it fails. You got what you want I guess.

And yeah, I see your tweets sometimes because people think you are stupid too. Twitter is neat like that. I had never been blocked so didn’t even know what that was. You can now get back to writing your big man post that could have been written at any point in 12 years. That’s incredible.
