Fitz' comment about Jeremy Lin draws criticism
First off, I'm not posting this to start an argument about Pat Fitzgerald. Divided as some of us may be, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with his abilities as a head football coach.
However, I feel that this tweet should be noted. Fitz is the face of the program (and the university in some cases) and this tweet did come off as ignorant and reminiscent of Gregg Easterbrook (an unfortunate recipient of a Masters from Medill). It obviously depends on how you read into the comment, but it certainly seemed racially charged to an extent. Watson points out that Fitz has said nothing of Derrick Rose, a Chicago product who has done nothing wrong on or off the court since coming to the NBA (or any other basketball player for that matter). Considering inner city kids make up a large part of the pool of heavily recruited NCAA football players--many of whom are very active on Twitter--this comment isn't smart.
He took it down and this is not going to have a big impact. But for a coach who consistently gets praised for the image he portrays of himself and the institution he works for, this came as a surprise.

i think this is making too much out of nothing.
he clearly didn’t mean to insult every nba player ever.
On the flip-side
I guess it means that Fitz spends so much time dissecting football film that he hardly has any time to watch the NBA.
He's getting killed on WSCR afternoon show for it
And once you get on those guys’ list you pretty much have to die pulling a baby out of a burning building to get off it.
It is talk radio after all...
Gotta come up with something, right?
Methinks whomever posted this tweet
Just doesn’t watch that much NBA, or is generally unfamiliar with the league. More likely, it was a stream of consciousness tweet that wasn’t thought about that much beforehand.
If Fitz is a good coach, he’ll use this as a teaching moment for his players to learn that a single, mostly innocuous tweet can ignite a firestorm.
I hope NU isn’t making stuff up about Mr. Cedja “accidentally” posting the tweet on Fitzgerald’s account. It’s certainly tempting to be suspicious about that, and I hope that Fitz would address that publicly.
Also,
Coach/player twitter accounts should have a 5 minute delay, or better yet (replace youtube comment with tweet in the below):

How did I not see this?
Look as a bonafide Fitz is overrated guy, I of course want to slam him for this, but in truth, there isn’t much to say. Clearly, he didn’t write it, but the bigger point is, why can someone else tweet for him?
It’s his twitter account, so he is responsible for it.
