Northwestern Wildcats vs. Illinois Fighting Illini Game Thread

Northwestern Wildcats at Illinois Fighting Illini, Feb 5, 2012 2:00 PM CST

IT'S FINALLY HERE.

After weeks of waiting, today is February 5, and the big game is here: Northwestern is playing Illinois in basketball. Surely, you're attending one of the countless Northwestern vs. Illinois parties people across the country are throwing - friends, beer, wings, chips and dip, and Northwestern vs. Illinois, a timeless combo - but if you're not, feel free to comment along in the thread. Sure, some people are just watching for the commercials that will be played during Northwestern vs. Illinois or the halftime show, but we the fans are here for the big game, Northwestern vs. Illinois. This one is for all the supers! Boy oh boy, I just can't believe it's here after the long wait. Millions upon millions will be watching and you can bet the buzz at the water cooler tomorrow will be about the game - actually, it might be about those commercials!

Neither team is ranked.

going small AND 1-3-1?

reggie hearn holding down the middle of the zone… this seems like a bad idea, but otherwise you’re putting shurna on leonard, which is bad for a) defense b) foul trouble

by Rodger Sherman on Feb 5, 2012 2:09 PM CST reply actions

Kraken is good against the Illini

They don’t have too many 3-shooters. Of course, we’ll get crushed on the boards.

by RotoJeff on Feb 5, 2012 2:10 PM CST reply actions

agree

but it’s what we have to do, i think.

by Rodger Sherman on Feb 5, 2012 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

You know what, he made it...

but if Brandon Paul wants to take 24-foot 3’s all day, I’m ok with it.

by RotoJeff on Feb 5, 2012 2:24 PM CST reply actions

definitely

i’m very impressed with our defense right now. weak side help on leonard keeping them from getting him the ball, the only problem is that we can’t rebound our misses.

by Rodger Sherman on Feb 5, 2012 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

I must be dreaming

did I slip into a coma on Friday and now live in an imaginary world where Jeremy Lin and Reggie Hearn are ballers?

or are there a ridiculous amount of commercial breaks? are they prepping for the super bowl or something?

i’ve only been watching for a few minutes, and it seems like those timeouts were spaced incredibly evenly apart

yeah ....

for what it’s worth, I said 24-foot 3’s.

But he was 2-for-16 beyond the arc before today in his previous few games. Not looking as good now.

Wide-open 3’s, no. Contested 3’s, yes.

by Rodger Sherman on Feb 5, 2012 2:50 PM CST reply actions

What do you do on defense?

Do you go switching man, and let Leonard get his. Or do you go zone, and hope to get TOs and transition buckets but leave yourself vulnerable to Brandon Paul?

Of course, this assumes that we keep our offense at a high efficiency. God bless Reggie Hearn, but ShurnaFord’s gotta step up — or maybe we get Marco going.

Lookin’ good so far — for the most part, we’re taking care of the ball. As much as I thought Illinois got the benefit of some charging calls (which were borderline no-call or blocking), we did get Leonard for two 3-second calls.

Also helps us get boards.

by SeattleCat on Feb 5, 2012 2:58 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

I agree

At the same time, we can’t rebound out of the zone to save our life (much less rebounding man to man).

Yeah, I’d go 1-3-1 primarily and dare them to beat us.

Keep switching looks….best chance is to keep them off balance

by Chadnudj on Feb 5, 2012 3:03 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

Yeah--

That’s the likely option. Perhaps go 1-3-1 off of makes, and go switching man when you don’t. Tough to set up 1-3-1 if IL goes uptempo.

Just make faces at the Illini until the shot clock expires.

by Glopknar on Feb 5, 2012 3:22 PM CST reply actions

and here's a question

do the refs go in at half time and sit down and be like “ok so guys, we are NOT calling enough fouls. we gotta hit NU with more”

by pfoley on Feb 5, 2012 3:22 PM CST reply actions

shurna

i could deal with that happening

by Rodger Sherman on Feb 5, 2012 3:22 PM CST reply actions

These refs have been brutal with the charge calls

Both times this half, the defense is moving, and worse yet — the offensive player needs a chance to land. You cant just set up under a guy and flop.

Absolutely terrible.

By the way, Sobo is one tough sumbitch

Between him and Maniscalco, I can’t tell who’s the frosh and who is the senior.

I also love that dribble move Sobo does by leaning into the defender when he’s going into the frontcourt.
