Bid Stealing Update, March 8

With every game counting for so much now, we Wildcat fans need to be wary of any teams who are out to try and steal one of the automatic bids in their conference tournaments from more accomplished, possible at-large invitees to the NCAA Tournament.

Alright, since I covered all the conferences (except, somehow, the Summit League) in my earlier posts, it's time to cover the games. Some tournaments are done, some are in progress, and a few haven't started quite yet. I'll break it down into three categories -- In the Clear, In Good Shape, and Could Be Trouble. Let's get cracking, shall we?

IN THE CLEAR

Big East
Locks Remaining: 6
Bubbles Remaining: 2(?)
PBTs Remaining: 0
What Happened:
UConn likely pulled themselves off the bubble with back-to-back wins against DePaul and West Virginia. On the other hand, West Virginia, whom I had listed as a "lock" previous, is now on the bubble, as their RPI will likely drop to the low-50s somewhere with the loss. Georgetown took care of #13 PBT Pitt, and #6 USF knocked out #13 Villanova. Meanwhile, Wildcat victim Seton Hall likely saw its bubble pop against Louisville. Currently #54 in the RPI, they will drop down a few spots and out of contention.

Colonial (CAA)
Conference Winner: VCU
What Happened:
VCU downed Drexel in Monday's CAA Final. I don't include this in the section "Could Be Trouble", because both teams were bubble teams to begin with. Yeah, it would have been nice if one of them went down earlier in the tournament, but hey -- at least one of them got the automatic bid, right?

Ivy League
Conference Winner: Harvard
What Happened:
Princeton managed to take care of business Tuesday night, dropping Penn 62-52 on their home court. That victory (and subsequent loss for Penn) gave Harvard the conference title outright, avoiding a one-game playoff with Penn for the automatic NCAA bid.

Missouri Valley (MVC)
Conference Winner: Creighton
What Happened:
Illinois State gave us all a scare by beating Wichita State in the semifinal. However, the Bluejays gutted out a close win on Sunday, 83-79, to win the MVC title and the automatic bid.

Sun Belt
Conference Winner: Western Kentucky (!!!)
What Happened:
An underachieving team got hot. #7-seeded Western Kentucky, with a current record of 15-18, won their last six games in a row, including four in the Sun Belt Tournament, to take the automatic bid. The at-large contestant, Middle Tennessee State, has dropped off to #58 in the RPI -- a fringe bubble team at best, and likely behind us if we beat Minnesota tonight.

West Coast (WCC)
Conference Winner: St. Mary's
What Happened:
The two locks of the conference, Gonzaga and St. Mary's, each won their semifinal games to advance to the final. At that point, I stopped caring.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Big XII
Locks Remaining: 5
Bubbles Remaining: 1
Potential Bid Thieves (PBTs) Remaining: 3, including Texas
What Happened:
Not a whole lot. Texas A&M beat Oklahoma yesterday and has a date with #1-seed Kansas. Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech, and they get #2 Missouri next. Yawn.

Conference-USA
Locks Remaining: 2
Bubbles Remaining: 1
PBTs Remaining: 5
What Happened:
PBTs knocking themselves out happened, WHAT WHAT! #7 Rice, #11 SMU, UTEP/Houston, and UAB/Tulane all go down and go home. The real action starts this afternoon as #2 Southern Miss meets #10 East Carolina in the second round of the tournament.

COULD BE TROUBLE

Atlantic-10
Locks Remaining: 2
Bubbles Remaining: 3
PBTs Remaining: 4
What Happened:
No upsets happened. #5 St. Joseph's dispatched Charlotte going away, 80-64, in Tuesday's contest. George Washington did no better, losing to Dayton by 17. #6 Dayton plays #3 Xavier Friday night in what amounts to a play-in game. As a result, I'm raising the risk of this conference to 2.5, or "vewwy vewwy nervous".

MAAC
Conference Winner: Loyola (MD)
Sasser's Bid-Stealing Guess: Iona, 50%
What Happened:
Iona lost to Fairfield in the Semifinal round on Sunday, ending their chance at an automatic bid to the Big Dance. However, Iona has gotten some help -- some shuffling of the RPI board has placed Nevada in the Top 50 (#47, to be exact), giving Iona a big win that they didn't have previously. Iona's SoS is a big strike on the resume, but their overall RPI of 42 isn't too bad. Keep an eye on this one.

Redheaded Stepchild of the "Big Six", a.k.a. Pac-12
Locks Remaining: BWAAAAHAHAHA
Bubbles Remaining: 4
PBTs Remaining: 4
What Happened:
Four meaningless and undeserving teams lost tonight. That's about it.

Summit League
Conference Winner: South Dakota State
Sasser's Bid-Stealing Guess: Oral Roberts, 20%
What Happened:
Western Illinois happened to Oral Roberts in the Semifinal, and then South Dakota State happened to Western Illinois. SDSU was at best a fringe bubble team going into the tournament, but a perfect run gives them #50 in the RPI and the automatic bid. Oral Roberts is just above them at #49, but their SoS may drag them down and out of consideration for the NCAA Tournament.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS TO WATCH: ACC, Big Ten (D'uhhhhhhh), Big West, Mountain West, SEC, WAC
