Chris Collins plays all the Chicago sports

USA TODAY Sports

First it was hockey. Thursday, it was baseball. WHY ISN'T CHRIS COLLINS PAYING ATTENTION TO NORTHWESTERN BASKETBALL?!?!?!?!?!?!? (Oh yeah, he's cool and making people excited about it.)

Chris Collins is Northwestern's basketball coach, and apparently, that means taking part in ceremonial sport appearances across the city. Who knew?

First up was... am I getting this right? Hock-ey? Apparently it's popular in Southern California, where teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks have won championships of late. Anyway, someone with a little bit of purple in their heart paired up Bears defensive end Corey Wootton - MAN, it's fun to type "Bears defensive end Corey Wootton" and coach Collins in the Shoot the Puck thing, where fans and random celebrity types invariably fail to slot the puck into little tiny holes in a pretend goalie from center ice:

Just a bit outside, coach. Props to Woot for actually putting the puck on net and just getting denied by the edge of the cardboard cutout. Kick save and a beauty. The Hawks won, because... Jesus, do the Hawks ever lose? (In all honesty, it's the time of the year where I start watching hockey in between basketball games, because playoff hockey is great. Henrik Lundqvist is going to win the Vezina Trophy, you guys.)

Thursday, it was over to Wrigley Field, where coach Collins was to throw out the first pitch and sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame", because for some reason the Cubs played a day game on the same day most of Chicago was busy not leaving their house because of a friggin monsoon.

That's a strike, SON!!!! And no warmup, neither. Just nailed it. On the plus side, looks like Chris will be used to the type of crowds we get at Welsh-Ryan. The Cubs won, because everybody wins when Chris Collins is there.

Collins was just getting Wrigley prepped for the Northwestern baseball team, who plays Michigan at Wrigley Field Saturday. Remember that partnership with the Cubs? They haven't really hyped this up much, because it's Northwestern baseball, but it starts this weekend. So far as I can tell, the diamond Cats have been decidedly mediocre this year, which is a step up from their prediction of dead last in the conference. And did y'all hear the organist play the fight song?

Twitter has come to varying conclusions about how his various performances bode for the upcoming future of Northwestern basketball:

For one, I'm disappointed we were robbed for 13 gosh-darn years of the opportunity of seeing Bill Carmody play random sports and/or sing the national anthem. I would love to see Billy alternating between sarcastic jokes and being unbelievably vicious and ornery while on the mic. That would have been great and silly.

But yeah, it's nice to see this. Pat Fitzgerald's been doing it for a while, and hey, we have a basketball team, too!
