The existential questions surrounding NU baseball

Why spend money on a program so futile? Because we produce a modest, but fair, number of Major Leaguers.

Jack Konopka, No. 75

Jack Konopka has performed admirably as a tight end and right tackle, but this year has to slide in at left tackle, a position where Northwestern has had great stability and talent. Is the junior up to the task?

Armon Gates hired as NU assistant

Northwestern's got their third and final assistant coach, and it's Armon Gates from Loyola (Chicago), who has done more than you did before you turned 27.

The existential questions surrounding NU baseball

Why spend money on a program so futile? Because we produce a modest, but fair, number of Major Leaguers.

Armon Gates hired as NU assistant

Northwestern's got their third and final assistant coach, and it's Armon Gates from Loyola (Chicago), who has done more than you did before you turned 27.

Eric Olson, No. 76

Eric Olson is a 6'6, 285 pound offensive tackle who had an offer from Michigan and a silky touch from beyond the three-point arc. (Sign him up, Chris Collins.)

Kenton Playko, No. 77

WHO WANTS TO TALK ABOUT BACKUP OFFENSIVE LINEMEN?!??!! Kenton Playko is one, after redshirting his freshman year.

Kafka, HAWKS, Kontos, and other Thursday Sips

DOO DOO DA DOO DOO DA DOO DOO DA DOO DEE DOODEE DOOP. Also, Mike Kafka, potential starting QB, George Kontos, sorta the opposite, and maybe Northwestern might play Notre Dame?

+

Mike Jensen, No. 80

Mike Jensen started as a walk-on now he's here. ("Here" is a key contributor on special teams, a guy who makes a couple of receptions a year, has a scholarship, and was called NU's spring MVP by Pat Fitzgerald.)

ND preps wuss out, NU wins APR, and more Wed. sips

Notre Dame really doesn't look like they're going to play Northwestern after all, but at least Northwestern once again had the best APR of any school in the nation.

Kafka signs with Jags

Mike Kafka wasn't unemployed for very long after being cut by Tim Tebow, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars and earning the option to hook up with a former wide receiver in Jeremy Ebert.

Paul Jorgensen, No. 81

Paul Jorgensen is the rare offensive lineman with a touchdown to his name. He'll be a bit more traditional in 2013, as he's the likely starter at right tackle.

43

Kafka cut for Tebow WHAT WHYYYYYYYY and other sips

Mike Kafka isn't on the Pats anymore, thanks to Tim Tebow, NU baseball got money and got drafted, I HAVE A NEW TWITTER YOU SHOULD FOLLOW, and bettors don't like Northwestern as much as oddsmakers.

Andrew Scanlan, No. 82

Andrew Scanlan's a Philly kid who played both ways in high school, but projects as an outside receiver. There's a bit of a ways to climb up the depth chart, but he's a redshirt freshman with room to grow.

18

Mike McHugh, No. 83

Mike McHugh redshirted his freshman year, but the 6'3 wide receiver from St. Louis is set to receive some playing time - not a whole bunch, but some - as the deepest WR corps in Northwestern history takes the field.

Vegas likes the Cats

Northwestern is favored in seven of nine lines released, by double-digits in five. I guess Vegas figured things out after Northwestern beat the spread in 12 of 13 tries in 2012.

Mark Szott, No. 85

Sophomore Mark Szott hasn't gotten into the game much, but with a lack of depth at the superback position, he'll step up in 2013. But how? We... don't really know.

Georgetown reportedly hires Tavaras Hardy

The first bad news of the Chris Collins era: Northwestern has reportedly lost player-turned-assistant Tavaras Hardy, one of the keys in improved recruiting in recent years, who has apparently taken a job at Georgetown.

44

Jack Schwaba, No. 86

There's a role on the Northwestern Wildcats for Jack Schwaba at superback, but I guess the point we should be discussing is why we can't just call this guy a "tight end."

No. 89, Max Chapman

Max Chapman holds a unique record, so far as we can tell. Don't you want to find out what the Northwestern defensive end did that's unique? No? Jerk.

3

No. 89, Austin Carr

Austin Carr is a walk-on wide receiver and one of two Nos. 89. Can he be a factor in ways not related to his singing voice?
